Sounds like you need the hd800 to have the best of both worlds

Ouch

Food for thought.
Experienced the three yourself? Tell me more please.

i found my peace in a hd650  + SPC cable  .....it is my "hd600 on steroids" :p

Sure still sounds interesting. I asked that cable builder what he found to be the differences compared to stock but I ran out of words after trying for three times. Couldn't get through to him so ''600 on steroids'' must do.

And oh yes, after a bit more listening let me add that the 650 has that buttery smoothness working for it so well. 600 can't touch that.
Edit: just read myself back. What is ''buttery smooth'' on some records is that ''unengaging veil'' on others. Interesting stuff.

IMO, one can lay back any undesirable treble on a recording with a touch of EQ. Since one can vary the EQ, one can fix any recording more exactly than switching cans. I believe some Android apps allow a per song selection of a custom EQ setting.
Besides, maybe the artist/composer/whatever wanted a certain song to be bright or not so bright to set the mood. If so why should we tamper? If the music was produced shabbily it might suck in many other ways as well.

Hey all - new to the thread, I'm tempted to buy a pair of the HD600.

I gave them a brief test/comparison to the HD800, and actually preferred the 600.

To my ears, it had a little more body and low-end, which I personally prefer.

Did anyone else find the 600 to have a little more bass quantity than the 800?

Maybe you felt this way because the hd800 also has more treble energy in addition to the bass?
I think it's generally agreed that the hd600 is a "darker" headphone, maybe as a result of this.

Interesting - perhaps the test gear they laid out in the Sennheiser booth was colouring the sound more than I realised.

The sibilance/treble of the 800 was a little too much for me.
Sibilance is a common complaint with the 800. If your bothered by it, you won't even notice the bass performance. Although I've heard the 800 go real deep, it can sound a bit strident on the wrong amp. It's an interesting can. I don't have it, but I would like to spend some time checking it out. That's a lot of bread.

Hmm.. I could definitely see that.

I think my preferences are more focused toward a "dark" signature, which may have helped.

At the end of the year I bought the HD650 and HD600 from my local dealer.
They insisted i buy both and return the one I didn't want.
It only took me 2 days to return the 650s. I think the 600 sound better more often. It is also noticeably more efficient which I like.
If I didn't have the 600 to compare, I would have liked the 650 but against the 600 + $100 was no contest.
If they sounded the same, I would have actually chosen the more expensive  650 for the color (marble sucks) and the 1/8" cord...

I made my choice much faster. I went into J&R Music World and compared the two with my own amp and music. I couldn't believe the difference. After 45 minutes of making sure, I left with an HD600 and a smile on my ears.
I also compared the HD700 and didn't care for that. Now the HD800 was awesome but over budget.

Just pulled the trigger on a pair of HD600's from the classifieds! Pretty excited.

I have a question for you guys. I already have a pair of DT770's and an Objective2 amp. Will the O2 run the HD600's nicely, or should I invest in a new amp as well?  Regardless, I am going to get a DAC since I will be listening from my PC.

The O2 will be perfect if you want the most high fidelity , accurate sound possible . If you want flavour maybe go down the tube amp route. I personally like accuracy but I also have a flavour I like, I let the music bring the flavour not the amp.

...and you can always consider getting a tasty, flavorful DAC to compliment your O2...
