Sennheiser HD 600 Impressions Thread

Lol... Well, I haven't bought any interconnect or custom cable but I tried few cables and interconnect. The reason I plan to get custom cable is because I hate long stock cable, and I aim for the affordable, not the premium grade. Of course you can braid or tie with zip tie etc but I prefer minimalism, and yet they looks better. Both of my FA-003 and HD 600 cable is a mess. Phew...

The affordable decent quality cable will sound just as good. Yes sometimes the long HD600 stock cable gets on my nerves but other times when I lay in bed with an amp on my night table, the length doesn't seem to be a problem. The length causes problems when I store the headphones and have to wrap up the wires. I haven't cut the cable to see if the wires are cleanly solderable but I'm tempted to buy another stock cable, cut it shorter and solder a new plug at the end. The only thing is that I'd be swapping cables when I prefer the length to a desktop amp and probably wear out or damage the connection at the HD600 from constant plugging and unplugging.

Hey Stan! I also use my E12 with HD600's. When you 1st started talking about cables-not-making-a-difference, I thought you were only talking about custom power cables. Did I misunderstand or are you saying any and all cables sound the same? I'm using a $9 Fiio L9 LOD from IPC to E12. I'm curious about your opinion regarding custom made LOD's. Just got a quote for one costing $70 bucks!

As long as the quality, shielding and construction are good enough, Copper is fine. IMO involving gold or silver in the wire makes no difference. If the wire is very thin or has unusually high capacitance then you have a problem, otherwise you should be good to go. I've measured the capacitance of the stock HD600 cable and it has no affect on audio at 300 Ohms and if the cans were even lower impedance even less affect which again is nothing. Some folks will swear by all sorts of stuff and that's their right to do so.
I don't have an iPhone or iPod, etc. so I can't vouch for the quality of the FiiO L9 LOD or any Apple type of LOD for the matter. I have read posts where some folks claim that a particular LOD gets loose a little bit too easily and others refuted that claim, don't remember which one. As far as the type of wire, IMO, there's nothing to worry about. You shouldn't have to spend a fortune for decent quality. Good listening

I've seen some amps say "300mw into 300 ohms" or "150mw into 300 ohms", I'm assuming that shows how powerful the amp is. Does the HD600 need an amp that says 300/300 vs the less powerful 150/300?

The numbers that I can find are that 6.31 mW will take it to 105 db SPL and 199.53 mW will take it to 120 db SPL. That means with some quick easy math, knowing that a -3db requires 1/2 the power, then 117 db SPL should require 99.76 mW. So 150mW should be loud enough to raise your eyebrows and then some. If your equipment doesn't have such a huge S/N ratio this should be enough, Most recorded music is compressed somewhat,l so I don't think you'll need any more headroom. 150 mW should be very very loud, ouch loud.

For what it's worth I have two amps the Nuforce HDP and the Bottlehead Crack, the HDP puts out about 150mw and the Crack about 280mw if I remember right.  Both sound good and I don't get anywhere near full volume.  I listen at about 1:30 on the HDP and about 10 on the crack.

The biggest thing is don't get caught up in the numbers, the 600s will benefit more from quality power rather than a ton of power.

Hi guys, new to the thread. My HD600 is in the mail, excited to hear it. I'm sure this has been asked a million times and is subject to personal opinion, what is a popular desktop amp around $150-$200 that goes well with the HD600?

Sennheiser HD 600 is a very good headphone.

It has a naturl sound and vivid liveness.

I like listening the classical and jazz with HD600.

I'd save an extra $79 and get a Bottlehead Crack.  It's fantastic with the HD600's.

How difficult is the Bottlehead Crack to assemble? I have a soldering iron and have used it several times.

ImI'm also considering getting the NFB 11.32, any comments on that? Comments comparing the two? One advantage or the NFB is that is also has a DAC, which I currently don't have.

If you need an amp/DAC combo the NFB 11.32 and NFB 15.32 are great options. For a standalone amp the Lake People G103 is another good choice in that price range but you'll need a DAC. The Schiit Modi is a good low-cost DAC.

?????"Lovely headband"?????

Man, beauty must truly be in the eye of the beholder cause I think they look hideous!

Yep the appearance of the HD600s is a polarizing topic. :) I actually think they look really great and even better than the HD650.
