I know this is an old post but are you serious?  The M50's really suck up against a proper simple mod on the 449.  Do the two hole Bass mod ( not the one linked above) and add 439 Velours on the 449 and you got a beast of a low -entry level phone.  With the mod-the bass is deeper, tighter with more layers ( M50 = king of one note bass), the mids and treble are fantastic.  And the soundstage and image the 449 produce the M50 only wishes it could sound as good.
Don't get me wrong the M50 is a "Good" phone while the modded 449 is a "Great" phone.

Hi I see that there are a lot of people who know the HD449's
I actually live in Sydney and want cans preferably over ears but will settle with on ears if comfy.....
I have the following headphones available to me under AUD150
HD449
HD439
UE 4000
MDR-V55
MDR-XB600
I'm gonna get the MDR-1R's in July need something on a temporary basis....
I'll also get a E17 or E12 in July can't decide!!!!!
I have also have a XBA-3 which I love but want something with a little more bass....
And when I say little I mean little.......
I am siding towards the HD449 or the UE 4000....
I listen to rock pop and acoustic music......
Thanks in advance.....

ATH M50 THE BEST!

They certainly aren't! But for 160 euros (in where I live) they definitely are and I vote for M50!

However I personally decided to buy Roland RH-A30 instead of M50 and I did that fully consciously. I auditioned both and made a decision. But back then I was looking for high quality, high detail sound and I didn't really mind whether it will be open or closed can.

Now I am looking for closed cans, and it really is tough decision. However I won't be buying M50 and it won't be HD449 either. It also won't be any Sennheiser, and it is very unlikely that it would be some ATH. If your ears are small then maybe get Momentum, otherwise I'm interested my-self what headphones are good. Is M50 really the only choice...?

Considering the price differences, in my country m50 is slightly more expensive. I think HD449 is a better value considering they are lighter and sounds more neutral. hd449 is a budget monitoring headphone, its one of those headphone that has a true-to-recording. You will need an amp to drive both headphone( like the cheap fiio e6 $30). To my taste, m50 is not neutral, it has some Bass boost that is sometime overwhelming. If you want more honest sound, as a musician, i would recommend Hd449 more, for basshead, i say no to the two.

Rock and pop music? Depend on how you use them, if you're going to travel a lot then HD439 is a good bargain(considering their detachable cable). While if you listen at home, you may want an open back headphone or some semi-open like Hd449 or xb600

By the way, Beyerdynamic custom one pro should be better than this two, better built and overall sound. i have been using the 4 adjutable sound(mainly bass) and its very useful from Classical music to Hip Hop.Do not be a victim of review that says the adjustable bass port in custom one pro are useless, its very useful, considering the price of custom one pro is almost the same as M50 and hd449(depending on which country and their sales) but its $160 at amazon now, the best bargain ever.
