Roll Call for Team AKG
Feb 6, 2013 at 5:02 PM Post #886 of 1,537
I own a K500 for home and a K414P for mobile use.
I wonder if I should buy a K272HD or a K550 for home recording (don't want to hear the backing track when recording with a microphone). Couldn't find a shop to compare them directly yet.
Also, what's the best (affordable) in-ear phone from AKG?
Thanks for any hints,
Christoph

Is there any definitive way to tell which stage of production Sextetts are?  I've had mine since the late 70's.  I'm just curious as to which variant mine are.

In this thread you will find the answers you're looking for: http://www.head-fi.org/t/243339/akg-k240-sextett-gradod-akg

Vermilion-colored passive diaphragms = oldest Sextett,
white diaphragms with some red showing through from their sides = second-newest,
white diaphragms with no red = newest.

Then again, no one has been able to put any specific dates on these.

Do I count? K701, K270S, K404 on the way. ....... I want a K3003..... But heh yeah can't afford it.
I have never heard a AKG I didn't like, and seem to like their sound signature the most, ESP with female vocals. While my SRH850 is great, same with my planars, the AKGs are unmatched. I wish they would make a planar.
Update: add the K-160 600ohm to that list

I bought the HE5Le, and it is prety much a planar Q701 IMHO. I highly recommend it! I didnt like the HE400 but the 5le is amazing.

On a side note, I have a pair of K340 Bass Lights on the way :) so pumped. I just need a K1000 to complete my TOTL AKG collection. Then maybe ill get K701 and K702, but cant justify it now since i have Q701

The K 340's prices are way too high seeing as what you get is a problematic phone. The Sextett is better technically except in the treble. In fact lots of contemporary AKG are technically better - the K 250, K 241, and K 240 DF to name a few.

Just added K550's to go with my K701s. The 550s are great for EDM, bad recordings and mobile use. My Blackberry drives them easily with no extra amp required. I'm pretty happy about that last bit.

I paid 170 for em. I think it's a good deal :)

If you're looking for studio sound, it was a less good deal. If you like a lush sound, you may have made a good deal in that you bought them. If you specifically wanted the K 340, then any deal is a good deal.

The K 340's problem is that for 100 € you not only can get several pairs of AKG's old dynamic phones but also full electrets like the ECR-500 or Unipolar 2000. The K 340 can really only compete with them in two ways: soundstage and treble.

Not saying they're bad phones, just overpriced.

I think the K550s are easily driven and in addition they are quite forgiving of low quality amplification. They have a smooth treble, indeed they have a slight smoothing effect to everything. For absolute quality this is a negative but when I want that I use my K702s, however for listening on basic amplification the K550s are very useful.

My main use for my K550s has been when working abroad. I bought them just before a lengthy trip to south america. I was working in a situation with other people and so it was great to have such good isolation.

I do have my K702s as well and when at home these are my most often used headphones. However I do use the K550s from time to time as well at home.
