Roll Call for Team AKG

I'm looking for a closed back headphone for a portable rig. The K550 seems like a good choice as it is low impedance though I admit I haven't had an opportunity to try one yet. No head-fi meets in northern New England.

They really are very good apart from the long-ish cable which has to be rolled up.

They are very big headphones so, it is good to consider this as well of course.

It is useful that they fold flat-ish.

Just spent sometime listening to my k702's on a 47 Labs 4733 amp. Wow! The soundstage is unbelievably good and the midrange is great. The one complaint I can't find a solution to is these headphones feel like they struggle with bass.

Personally I don't think k70x struggle with the bass. I think they have nicely defined and extended bass.

I agree. It's just merely accurate. You have to spend some time getting used to it if you're coming from more consumer oriented headphones because the vast majority of them boost the bass quite a bit.

I prefer the sound of the bass of my k701 to my hd650 actually. I even think that dt880 is basswise a perfect headphone.

I've had AKG's since nearly the beginning of my 'headphone journey', but I've never posted here... it's all vintage anyway.

AKG K241 (I think I like these more than Sextetts)
AKG K240 Monitor
AKG K141 (original silver with sextett driver)
AKG K241/K140W 'Frankenphone' (two old broken headphones combined to work - currently being lent to a friend)

AKG K280 Parabolic (in a box, will sell it at some point)
AKG K36 Headset (in a box, will sell it too)

It's definitely growing on me.  The more I listen to these cans the more amazed I seem to be getting.

Of my cans I slightly prefer k701 to k501 and HD650. All three are wonderful cans but I just love the openess of the k701 and it's tonal balance. I even prefer it to Beyer DT880 that I have had on loan for a couple of days. DT880 is a very respectful can indeed but I think it is a bit flat and the soundstage is not as big as with my AKGs and the Senn. The most noticable difference is the height of the soundstage. Another thing is the "perceived" intimacy which I believe is because of DT880's somewhat recessed midrange.

I've heard/read/what-have-you that the K501 really gets the midrange right compared to the K701. Having lived with the K701 for a little while now I don't think it has that plasticy/artifical sounding highend that some reviewers claim it did.
