-This is the only AKG I own as of yet. Unamped they destroy all of my other phones. I will most likely buy an amp and then a new source before deciding on whether or not the K701's are necessary

K701. Widest frequency response of the cans I've heard so far, soundstage out the wazoo, and (from comparing to others, pretty much uncoloured). No complaints whatsoever, which is why I'll have these for a long time to come. With each extra upgrade of my system (amp, then DAC) these things have only got better and better. I'm curious about the K1000, but it sounds like too much effort with changing amps etc.

My introduction headphones was in 1975 or 1976 with the, then, new K240s. I still have that set although I have had to resolder the wiring a couple of times. I decided I needed to replace them and was disappointed to find that the current model with that lable is different so I went ahead and bought the k701s. I love them. They are not as transparent as the 240s but they have a beauty of their own.
