The distant mid range will go away if you turn up the volume I think. The K701/2 needs to be played loud in order to have the sound come together - then they have a very forward and incredibly sparkly midrange. This isn't a headphone built for low-level listening at all.

I say that is dependent on your amp. The MF X-CANV8P is a powerful headphone amp and generates a listenable volume from low at about 8 to high at about 1 o'clock.

I don't normally listen at loud volumes, so that's probably out. My Event monitor speakers are definitely more forward in the mids at any volume, but the 702 is much smoother with better details. Which is more true to the recording I can't say. I normally like forward mids, and so far that's the only minus with these phones. Will be trying a new cable built by a forum member next week. I don't think it's the amp, but I suppose it's a possibility.

Interesting. What made you give up the 702 and 601 for the K400?

Enjoy your 701. I just got the k702 off the for sale forum. Also have the 240DF which I love for it's clarity and 'neutrality'. The 702 does a lot of things even better...detail retrieval, bass, treble, huge sound stage....like them a lot in spite of somewhat distant mid range....maybe a little too light and airy for my taste, but otherwise great phones.

I often feel like I'm the only guy on the planet who likes the K701 in "distand mids" mode. I first listened to these on an LD MkII amp and loved the recessed mids! Now I'm using some beefier amps and the recessed mids are gone... I miss them to be honest. I loved those recessed mids, made the soundstage even bigger!

I will gladly trade you my LD mkV for one of your amps that has 'beefier' mids. The 'distant mids' will return for you along with the expansive sound stage!

It's quite good actually...amazing low end and detail.

Well, I've only got a pair of K420 but I do like the "fun and involving" sound of them so perhaps that qualifies me for the club?
I am interested in the K319 earbuds and I'm thinking about getting the K518 for my wife as she likes bass heavy headphones and the K518 are supposed to be just that.

Otherwise I like to spread my graces when it comes to (mid-fi) headphones and earbuds. I like Yuin, Sennheiser and Audio Technica as well as AKG. Right now I am looking for Pioneer SE-EX9 clip-on earphones.
