Review of Audio-GD DAC-19MK3

Just received my DAC-19MK3
L3000.gif
I comes with PMD100 in default configuration and I opened the case and it is PMD100 - but I can play 88.2kHz files with foobar with no resampling with my Musiland 02 US as the source. Musiland should have no problems with bit-perfect low jitter 88.2kHz output but how can PMD100 play it??? Does DIR9001 do some tricks or PMD100 just ignore data above 55.5kHz? This is strange ... I can't play 96kHz files thou with the PMD100.

The PMD100 is limited to 24/55khz and plays HDCD.
However, if you want to play high rez file at 88khz or 96khz, you have to install the B module (DF1704).

Yes I know that. But how the hell can I play 88.2kHz at the moment? Even when I use resampler 99.6>88.2 is plays. Maybe this is the wrong thread but seems that Musiland 02 US does not output correct 88.2kHz signal if PMD100 can play it.

The PMD100 can play the following : 16/44, 16/48, 24/44, 24/48.
88.2 is still above the 55 limit of the pmd100.
You should downsample to 24/48.

That is my point - PMD100 playing 88.2 with no resampling means Musiland has some serious problems playing 88.2kHz! 99.6kHz is static - 88.2 should be too, but it is not - plays fine (I can't say perfect because I have not gotten to critical listening, but music playing 88.2 is non distorted and plays like music, even 99.6>88.2 in foobar plays). My guess is that Musiland is resampling 88.2 to 44.1 - but playing 99.6 bit-perfect and hence that is static thru PMD100. 44.1 is bit perfect thru Musiland - I have a few HDCD's and when I change volume from maximum to -0.1dB in foobar it is clear that songs get louder because HDCD has switched off and -3dB HDCD decoding headroom is gone. When I set full volume again 44.1 HDCD content gets quieter because HDCD decoding has activated.

Olev, what version of foobar are you using and what output (asio, ks, ds) are you using ?

Edit :
I have just tought of a way to see if there is resampling by the musiland. I will do RMAA measurements at 88.2 (using the dac-19mk3 output to emu0404 usb input). If the Musiland is doing downsampling it would show on the rmaa graph.

That's interesting regal, i'm thinking about getting a 9MK3 for my home system. In a mail Kingwa told me that

"... The DAC9MK3 sound near RE1 by a little BRIGHT than RE1 and DAC3DV is different flavor, it sound a bit tube like, a bit soft and warm, but keep quite detail and dynamic"

That is interesting. I have been thinking of DAC-9MK3 for budget conscious. After hearing the potential of DAC-19mk3, I believe REF1 will pack more oompf.

I'm using foobar 0.9.6.9 and both Kernel Streaming and ASIO play 88.2kHz files with no problem. Just updated to Musiland 1.0.6.0 beta and still the same. Something is resampling somewhere and my guess is Musiland driver.

Wait a minute...doesn't the website indicate this DAC ships with mode "B" using module DF1704? I just ordered mine and this has me worried!

It was the most difficult decision yet to choose between DAC19Mk3 and DAC3. I would've love to keep them both but my budget didn't allow that. For now, DAC19Mk3 fits in my setup slightly better.

Patu, have you tried mode B yet?

I ordered both modes and mine came with PMD100 installed and DF1704 in a little box.

That explains it then, thank you! Maybe you can give us your impressions between the two modes?

I haven't tried the mode B yet. I probably will in near future though.
