AR DAP? What exactly is that?

"Acoustic-Research" I think. http://www.head-fi.org/t/653904/acoustic-research-mysterious-new-audiophile-dap

I see, thanks. As far as I know the AR brand has been sold numerous times and essentially watered down to the point where it no longer has any connection to the classic AR of yesteryear. It's like going to a hardware store and buying a cheap drill branded as "Kawasaki" - that name has some heritage to it, but it no longer applies in this case.

Do not know anything about that. Just know what I have tested, and it is a high quality DAP.

No disputing that - I'm just saying any new product must to be taken on its own merit, apart from the AR brand name and what it once meant. Sounds like this one is a good one.

Wonder which company is the actual OEM...

Good question. The situation reminds me of Insignia which is a house brand for the Best Buy chain of stores in the USA (which is now in decline but was very popular a few years back). Insignia had a lot of garbage products, from generic looking mp3 players to personal DVD players to boomboxes. Much of it was disposable but they managed to have a few very nice products as well. One was a Blu-ray player in the early days of the format which was quite nice for the price. Another was a stereo receiver which ended up being a rebadged Sherwood Newcastle model if I recall correctly. Last but not least was a set of bookshelf speakers which originally sold for under $50 and was actually very impressive for the price or even triple the price. Lots of mods came out for them, and Best Buy eventually bumped the price up to $90 or so before they were discontinued.

The thing with Insignia and I'm guessing AR is that each product comes from a different OEM, so you never know what you might find. I still have my heavily modified Insignia speakers as well as an old DAP which I discovered was made for them by Cowon. So this new DAP from AR might be made by iBasso for all we know.

Hi. I'm an exclusive sales agent of Monster Audio Co. ltd. in Russia and CIS (excluding the Ukraine)
I'm proud to say that Russian enthusiasts (with respect to me of cause

) have integrated famous rockbox firmware into this beautiful DAP.
Here is a link to MA Port of rockbox firmware and instructions for flashing: http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/HifietMAPort
Feel free to ask me the questions about it.

That's great news! I will give it a try when I have a chance. I love the sound of this device but with Rockbox it will be easier to use and more functional.... Making it even better.

Yes!

Alex, any idea if this will port to the other devices like iHiFi 812v2 or 960 which also use this same UI? Or what about the new HiFi ET MA8? It's just like the MA9 but with a different DAC section based around the PCM1792.

thats a pretty good news that will help this dap competes against the likes of ibasso dx100 or the AKs or other DAPs with better UIs, the best sound in the universe won't matter if the ui is actually bad wouldn't it?
