The 1982 version of "The Thing" can still get it done, especially if you haven't seen it.

I like my horror campy:

Dead Alive
Re-Animator

Of course, there is straight-up disturbing:

Audition

Not horror, but disturbing non-the-less:

Jacob's Ladder
Old Boy

Oh, I almost forgot: I find any TV commercial for Comcast quite disturbing.

I perfer the Number 1 at everything, so how about: The Exorcist.

Rated "Numero Uno" of horror films in most places- it deserves it. Another top 10 would be The Ring.

( The 1973 Classic of course)

You're right about Ringu versions, but the Korean version is the scariest IMO. Yikes...
The Juon still sometimes gives me flashbacks.
The Audition is a great choice, too. Yes, the Japanese are quite disturbed people

Oldboy is not exactly horror but very entertaining in disturbing ways.

Also, try watching the original Alien in the middle of the night in the dark by yourself. Wow.

if i have to

c] move away from the screen

i know its done its job

The beauty of Alien is not what you see, but what you don't see. Later movies in the series fark it all up and show the alien(s) over and over. Bleh. Gimme tension. If I can't see it, I can't understand it in my head. Nor can I get used to what it looks like. Go Ridley Scott.

BTW, if you don't already have it, get the Quadrilogy. Lots of useful behind the scenes info. Better than most...
