Q701 impressions thread

Hi I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive tube headphone amplifier to pair with the Q701s. Does anybody have any suggestions? I have a budget of about $200. Right now I have no headphone amplifier to drive the Q701s and I feel like they could benefit with a warm sounding amp.

Just to throw a few more into the mix:

Schiit Vali
one of the Garage1217 models

I love 'em through my Lyr, but I love 'em through my li'l JDS Labs C5, too

  I'm confused.

I'm reading that Q701 have less bass than HD650 but hearing completely otherwise. I'm using ODAC + O2 and for example "Get Lucky" sounds much bigger and bassier on Q701 than the 650. HD650 sounds more congested and thinner to me.

Anyone else having a similar experience?

While I had the HD 650s I experienced the opposite (more common?) sounds.  People say the HD 650s scale well.  I would think your "O" combo would drive them OK.  Strange that the HD 650s would sound thin.  Can you try another amp?

I finally found a store carrying these and I gotta say they sound a hell of a lot better than the K702's imo.
I'm pretty sure the K702's were the older model as they were too big for my head (like my 15 year old K240's)

I was cleaning my hard drive when I found this Harman marketing internal document from 2010.
Pretty interesting...

So Quincy wasn't in their target demographic?

The first review I read priced them at £500 (UK) and they were $799 here (AU). (no wonder they didn't race off the shelves)

I think Cross-Merchandising with smart phones wasn't too smart.

I didn't know I was too young to be an "Audio Emperor".
That's kinda cool though, haha!

Thanks! Shipping is too expensive for me so I might not consider the Garage1217 products. I'm very interested in the Vali though but don't really like the idea of it being microphonic.

Has anybody tried the Q701s through the Aune T1 Tube USB DAC? I think it would be the best bang for the buck for me because it includes both a DAC and a tube amp which I both need.

I re-read some of Voldemort's (he who cannot be named) musings and also this ( http://lsirui.wordpress.com/2009/04/15/k701-vs-hd650-electrical-measurement/ ) and from that I've come to the conclusion that the FiiO's would probably not be the optimal choice for the Q 701. Because of this, I'm seriously considering an O2/ODAC combo, but I wondering if there are any places (JDS Labs,, etc.) that would do a custom job for about $40 extra so it can take batteries. ( http://imgur.com/a/x29BF#0 ) If any of you know someone who could make a custom battery-powered O2/ODAC combo, please let me know here or by PM.

FiiO E17 and E12 do quite well with the Q701.

They are cheaper than the Lyr, for example, but you get what you pay for.

Just posted my first review on youtube on these headphones. More will come later but this review is specifically on the headphones. I wish I mentioned the bumps+color variations.

As for amping the Q701, I currently use the Maverick Audio TubeMagic D1 Plus with the Schiit Magni. If you want an all-in-one solution, the D1 Plus is really very nice. My only complaint about it is that it's quite loud. If you mod the D1 so you can control the volume of the analog out, it's good with the Schiit Magni, which has much better volume control. I have also used the Qs with the E17 and the E9. I did not like the E9 at all. I found the sound overall to be very unpolished. I think this has something to do with the output impedance.  The E17 is a great little dac/amp, but I wouldn't rely on it to power the Qs. You'll hear music, but they won't sound their best. The quality of your source will also make a difference. I've invested in a bit more 24bit music and I have to say, it sounds fantastic. That extra bit of clarity is really a pleasure through the Qs.

Also, I have no idea if this makes a difference or not, but my Qs are made in Austria, not China.
