I just ordered them from Amazon for $230 after countless hours of contemplation between these and the K701's. I really liked the way the 701's look, and that they had a great sound stage, but I decided that the 990's are an overall better phone. The 600 Ohms also did me in. I have an AV123 X-head for an amp right now. We'll see how well it drives the 990's. I hope decently, at least. I will write a review about how these two work together in a short while.

I've read that the bass is better with the 990's compared to the 880's. How is the bass with the 990/600 compared to the AT M50?

only had a fleeting experience with the m50 cans... but regarding the dt880 vs dt990 bass, one of the major differences i get when switching cans is the more plentiful bass from the dt990. mids are kinda recessed on the dt990 compared to the dt880...

hmmmm.. both are bass heavy.
the m50 bass is surprisingly good, especially for the price.  and, being a closed phone, the impact is also nice.
 
but, the dt990, with a good source, and properly amped, is considerably better.
granted, there's more bass than neutral.  but, i refute anyone who says it is muddy or flabby.
if you're getting muddy bass, you are not amping the dt990 properly.

Good choice, IMO. I much preferred my DT990/600s to AKG K702s, which I've owned twice.
