Prog rock

Yes, I think it was you that introduced me to them a few weeks back. I like all their albums. They are like a proggy Black Sabbath in parts. Just a bit short their latest at 35 mins!

Yup, that was me. I actually had no idea a new album was coming out as these guys are a new discovery for me (I rec'd them here basically right after I found them myself). When I got an email from their Bandcamp list saying they released a new one, I was stoked. When I saw that it was split with another band, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I actually enjoyed the Yama tracks, too.

Mangrove - Bridge to Fiction

This is one from last year, and I quite liked it at the time but it didn’t make my best of 2024 list. However you know those albums that’s just have that something that keep you coming back and each listen you like it a bit more..well this is one of those, such that I’ve been playing it quite a lot the last few weeks and it would definitely be in my best of 2024 list now. All the tracks are decent enough, accept the opening vocals/chorus to the first track which I hate (don’t let it put you off), however there are 2 real stand outs -
‘Stay’ ..as linked here.
and ‘A call to arms’. A 24 minute old school epic that is even better, very much in the IQ or Marillion mould. If a fan of either of those bands then definitely give these tracks and this album a go.

I also discovered the Jupiter Fungus album too late to get on my 2024 list, but again it’s a really good album that’s been getting plenty of plays recently. Rubbish band name mind!

Marked it up for later listening session :)

ps. It's now ok to post consecutively, there just has to be 24 hours between the two posts. This should help when things are quiet in the thread.

Ooh, I didn't know they had a new album out! Thanks for the heads-up!

Purely to keep things topical I'll post the prog-metal album I'm currently listening too.

I really enjoyed this album and have added the rest of their discography to my ROON library

I discovered an album that I've really been diggin'. It's from 2002 but it's new to me. It's got prog foundations, but there's so much more beyond that going on. Highly recommended! 🔥🤘😎

Another big fan of his guitar work here - I much prefer this to that plinky plonk math rock which while clever and very technical, does nothing for me, I prefer my guitar music to convey some feeling.
Commenting on an older post here @rids57, but I just checked if folks had been posting any math rock in this thread since whilst not progressive rock per se, there is some overlap and some see it as an off-shoot of prog rock.

In any case, I saw your comment and I wonder if something like this, which has many different rock elements (including some plinky plonk but also prog), still does nothing for you (it's fine if it doesn't  ):

(my apologies if math-rock is considered not to have a place here; there are a few other threads for it after all, albeit that they are all dead/stale. So please feel free to tell me to p*ss off)

Haha, don't mind me, it's just a personal taste thing, just because I'm not a big math-rock fan (I like some) doesn't mean it shouldn't be posted here. I see math-rock as a side shoot of prog so it's fine for this thread, so post away
