I tire of re-hashing my Moondrop single-DD reviews be it the KPE, Kanas Pro, KXXS, Starfield, Aria, Kato, KXXX, or Illumination. Yes, they've released that many (and more if you count, say, the Spaceship which the Chu is supposedly the successor to). These IEMs all sound pretty similar, and I'd say the Chu falls right along the lines of the solid tuning we expect from Moondrop. The Chu has the fabled "balanced", slightly more analytical tonality that no other IEM, to my knowledge, has managed to achieve for $20 yet. That itself is commendable; as far as I'm concerned, there are no outright dealbreakers sound-wise.
As for the ugly stuff, I definitely have more to talk about. Despite a 6dB bass boost and a reasonable level of control, the Chu has some of the softest bass that I've heard. I can hear the boost and I can tell the Chu's bass extends reasonably low, yet there's very little sense of excursiveness or air being pushed. A more minor issue I would point out - a tonality one, actually - is that the Chu's treble response comes across as splashy due to an excess of presence from 5-7kHz. There also seems to be some minor resonance at ~12kHz which exacerbates the aforementioned lack of control in treble. It should be noted that treble extension itself is impressive at least.
To go broader on the ugly bit, and into the usual no-no of commenting on the company instead of the product itself, Moondrop doesn't seem to know how to do anything else than work their way down the chain and re-hash the same IEM over and over at cheaper price points. I shouldn't be complaining...still, it's annoying knowing that whatever you buy today is going to be obsolete a couple months later at a cheaper price. Maybe that's not the Chu (as I can't really see how things can get much cheaper than
this), but I'd like to see some higher-end stuff from Moondrop that pushes the boundaries of what's possible in terms of technicalities instead. Two and a half years (since the release of the S8, probably their best IEM) is a long time to be standing still for what once used to seem like such a progressive company.
Back to the Chu, though. In terms of its competitiveness, I think it's tacit that the Chu is "well worth it" and a good value. As I alluded to above, though, the jaded part of me is less impressed and there's a lack of soul to the Chu that's hard to put in words. I feel that the CCA CRA, for example, is more along the lines of the proverbial diamond in the rough. The CRA is still more technical to my ears and - in particular - it sounds like it slams way harder. It's just that the CRA's tonality is obviously not as balanced.
