Taking many a cue from its flagship SE-Master 1 design, audio specialist Pioneer has just added a new headphone to its ever-growing range - the SE-Monitor 5 - offering hi-tech audio performance as well as support for both balanced and unbalanced audio.

This new set of closed-back, over-ear cups include a fancy new driver profile that uses a cellulose nano fibre (one taken from wood pulp, to be precise) to that minimizes unwanted resonances while keeping that audio signal clean and powerful.

To help maintain that clean signal, Pioneer has also included a patented 'Double Headphone Chamber' arrangement that combines a main chamber augmented with ported sub-chambers (to ensure a tight bass) while a magnesium alloy ‘Full Basket’ is used to fuse it all together.

Its cups even come with a 3D memory foam for extra comfort - just like the one used with the SE-Master 1. So while this set of headphones will set you back a pretty penny, you're still getting a lot of features previously only found in the premium high-end SE-Master 1.

Scheduled for release June 2017.

Some additional details:

99db sensitivity with 40 ohm impedance, should be fairly easy to drive.

Looks like the MSRP is going to be around the £999.99 mark.

That's actually a reasonable price.

Thanks for the additional details, yes it is about half the price of the SE-Master 1... Let's hope it sounds good.

happy to but in which thread?

but seriously, this thread is superfluous. perhaps you could consider relinquishing it and posting in the original.

alternatively, you could change the title of this thread to an impressions thread. that would distinguish it from the original and be more helpful to other forum members and users of this site who are searching for specific information about this can. tho that does seem rather premature at this stage tbh.

Let's see which one will have more people posting, the reason why the other one didn't come up in my search was there was NO space between "SE-Monitor" and "5" Let's let nature take its course. I believe this thread is in the right forum as it will be a TOTL Closed Back pair of Headphones. Cheers!

have it your way, but more folks have already posted in the other thread.

and the mdr-z1r is sony's totl closed-back can, and you'll find the thread for it in the full-sized headphone forum where it has received well over 9,000 posts - just sayin'.

Official Announcement from Pioneer as follows inclusive of what you can find in the box:

Pioneer are proud to announce the launch of it's Stunning new SE-MONITOR 5 Closed-back Dynamic Headphone.

Following on from the success of the Amazing SE-Master 1's, Pioneer have developed a breathtaking closed-back version, giving you all the advantages of an open-backed headphone without the sound leakage.

Achieving this meant exploring brand new and exciting new driver materials, innovating structures that limit resonance, and introducing proven technologies we unveiled in our SE-MASTER 1 flagship open-backed headphone.

Pioneer’s engineers turned to that most traditional of materials – wood – when developing the new headphone’s custom-built 50mm, full-range drive unit.

Wood drivers
Cellulose Nano-Fibre, formed from highly refined organic wood pulp, is used to form a unique driver profile that minimises undesirable resonances.

As a result of this, these headphones let your music unfurl over a vast and expansive soundstage with captivating separation, detail and control normally only found in an open-backed design headphone.

Supplied are two sets of detachable premium ear pads, offering both Velour & Leather type, these sculptured 3D memory-foam cushioned pads offer the listener extreme comfort for prolonged immersive listening.

Cables
The SE-MONITOR 5 comes with three sets of detachable audio cables. There’s the 1.6m and 3m leads for conventional unbalanced audio outputs (using 3-pole, 3.5mm connectors).

Additionally, you’ll find a 1.6m version in the bundle. This is specifically for balanced audio (using a four-pole, 2.5mm connector).

All the cables (constructed with OFC Litz wire) are carefully braided to resist electromagnetic interference.

The balanced version offers the potential for enhanced channel-separation, headroom and clarity, a perfect partner for the Pioneer XDP-30R & XDP-300R Balanced Digital Audio Players. Pioneer also provide a soft carry pouch as well.

Make a telepathic connection to music with the SE-MONITOR5. As a fully-enclosed dynamic stereo headphone that provides an excellent listening environment, focus is placed on faithful reproduction of Hi-Res Audio formats. Yet Pioneer has voiced them to convey music’s emotional intent for a listening experience that moves mind and soul.
