Nice rig. Guess cold i7 and warm IE8 are a good pair. Music great too - PT rules!

The i7 isn't cold, it's neutral becuase it has a flat frequency response. A DAP with a FR that rises up in treble and less bass is cold. The opposite is warm, with a big quantity of bass with steady roll off at the highs (to a point).

Either way, both a i7 and the ie8 sound good :)

I consider a flat response to be neutral but that's not the same thing as natural imo. Of course that's another topic in itself..

Wrong. Do you honestly think a flat frequency response means neutral/natural sound?

Neutral and natural sound are different altogether. A flat FR is technically neutral, so I don't know what is your point. Two flat FR headphones can have different sounds, but if we a talking graphs here, then neutral is flat, no questions asked.

Does that FiiO LOD really sound any different than just using the headphone-out and maxing the volume?

Looking forward to the answer to this question as well.

I haven't compared them before, I will do a comparison listening session sometime this weekend, probably tonight when I have some quiet time in a home of three kids.

I look forward to it too!

Just upgraded an iRiver H120 to an 80 Gb HD, 2,300 mAh battery, and Rockbox version 3.6. Next I will need a balanced cable and hook it all up to iBasso Toucan/Boomslang combo.

I have one on my Fuze feeding an E5 playing 320 MP3s (in the interest of saving storage space), The only thing I can notice going from a mini-mini to the LOD is, the bass seems to be a bit tighter and maybe I'm getting a bit more battery life out of my Fuze.
