Jdandy,

Serious eye candy there with those blue-green silver fanged eargrabbers that make Scotsmen similarly benamed a proud lot.

I eventually will be needing serious bollocks to drive a pair of Dunlavy SC-IVs I just landed by happenstance.  My puny Pioneer VSX-453, all 100 sorry watts, is straining heroically for the moment to give each note its due.  But seeing as you have a veritable stable of every McIntosh ever made, LOL, I have to ask if you'd humor me with a recommendation for a 250 watt Mc that won't cost me north of 2 thou.   I don't have the chance to auditon one that is affordable hereabouts, so thought I'd pop the question after seeing your mighty fine gear on display.  If it looks like something does exist, I could venture a try with the D's.

Wharfrat......I can easily recommend the McIntosh MC252 power amplifier at 250 watts per channel.  It will make your Dunlavy's jump up and take notice.  McIntosh just introduced a new MC302 that replaces the MC252 in the current line up, so there will be some good prices showing up on used MC252's.  Right now MC252 amplifiers are selling around $3K.  An older McIntosh amp, like the MC300 at 300 watts per channel is also a very fine amp.  You may be able to find an MC300 in the $2200.00 range.

immtbiker.......Thank you.  The handles just seem to give the MC352 amplifier's appearance more attitude.  This amp drives the front left and right speakers in my home theater system, and sits in a rack on the right side of my studio room.  I have an identical rack that sits on the left side of the room that holds the gear for a separate two channel system in the studio.  I just added a new McIntosh MC452 amplifier to that system, and it comes with handles, so installing handles on the MC352 helped create a nicer visual between the two amplifiers on each side of the room.

Jdandy:

Thanks for the input...I realize this means getting a preamp to mate with either one...so an additional expense there for which I will get death rays from the missus before I even open my wallet, LOL...as an alternative, a McIntosh integrated of comparable wattage might do the trick there, I would think..

I hope this is not off-thread.  If so, I apologize.  You do really have a wonderful setup.  I like the neat and visually appealing design of all your components as a composition (at least, to a guy!)...

Why are your 6328P's on the floor?

Lunatique.......The two JBL 6328P's are on an angled riser, and are my center channel speakers, placed on either side of the JBL 6312SP powered subwoofer, and are part of my 5.1 surround sound system.  In the shadows at the top of the photo are two JBL 6332 that are my left front and right front speakers, and in the rear, and not seen in the photo or two more JBL 6328P's for left rear and right rear speakers.  The rack on the right holds the surround sound system gear.  The MC352 powers the two passive JBL 6332's.  The JBL 6328P's are active bi-amped speakers.

This same room also has a completely separate two channel sound system, supported by the gear in the left rack that powers a pair of Sonus faber Guarneri Memento's and a pair of McIntosh XLS112 powered subwoofers.

Here are some photos that show the rear channel speakers on their supports, and a third photo that shows the JBL 6332 left and right front speakers in a better light.  I have since changed the two MC275 tube amplifiers in the two channel system to a new MC452 that I installed this past Monday.  I also moved my turntable to my main system upstairs.

I see. That's an interesting setup. I've never seen anyone use a pair of speakers for the center channel--usually it's just one speaker. I think the typical approach is to put the one speaker in the center, and put the sub right next to it (since LFC doesn't really have directionality), or have a pair of subs and put one at each at the left and right front channels.

I have auditioned the 6328p's in the past when choosing my reference studio monitors, and I quite liked them--they were very silky smooth and sounded much better than the 4328p's. I never heard them with the sub though.

I'd love to have a high-end surround setup one day, but that's one luxury I can't afford ATM. I have the Logitech Z-5500 for movies and games, and for that purpose they're ok. For normal stereo I have my Klein + Hummel O 300D's, and they are just sublime. I'd love to add two more of those and a couple of sub's to form a high-end surround setup, but I can't really justify the spending, especially when I'm not composing/mixing in surround ATM. If there's a demand for it in the future, I would have to consider it though.

Lunatique........I agree with you on the JBL 6328P.  They are quite accurate, and with their active bi-amp arrangement have plenty of power.  I use two more of the JBL 6328P's in the control room at a mixing console and digital work station.  I like them a lot.  I also use a pair of JBL 10G2 speakers at the Roland Fantom X6 keyboard.
