Philips Fidelio X2 : A Review by Baycode
Jan 21, 2015 at 4:13 PM Post #766 of 1,061
I spent an hour talking to various Philips reps about replacement ear pads. Bottom line...they do not offer the pads for sale and have no upcoming plans to sell them.

I emailed Philips UK the other week regarding replacement pads and he said they are coming and to contact Dutchwest, he even gave a part number.

Code:
Dear Joe, All good now. I have just received the part number from our global specialist. It is 996580003347 and the part name is simply 'X2 Cushion (Pair)'. Like I wrote before, it is just a matter of updating the parts list, translating them and deploying to all supported countries. For now you can keep this number and I believe that Dutchwest should be able to order these cushions for you soon. Thank you for bringing my attention to this. Kind regards, Tom Sanders

While I appreciate the favorable review ( I love the x2 also ), I didn't find it well written. The x2 better looking than the pm-1?...nah.

I'm glad to see that the pads will eventually be available. Lack of replacement pads is IMO a deal breaker on owning these fine hp's. Hopefully a US carrier will offer them soon.

what is the best way to burn this headphone in ? pink noise higher listen lvl for 200 hours ? or just music for 200 hours ? with amp ? or can I just use my sansa clip without amp ?

I found great synergy with my Rockboxed Sansa Fuze so Sansa Clip should be a great choice for driving the X2 as well...

For burn-in just play music with them in the night (when you go to bed, just put the X2 and Clip in a drawer and under some clothes to prevent sound leakage and disturbing you). Don't raise the volume too much. Use the volume where you normally listen them to or a little higher. That's all... And count the hours

A member send me a private message and wanted to know the cup diameter of X2. Since I couldn't find the message in my mail box I wanted to share the information here (so he can see and others may benefit).

X2 cup diameter (on the largest side) is 100mm or in other words 10cm.

X2 earcups are 100mm or 10cm on the largest side.

(From the photo it seems that I didn't measure it from the largest part but it is,
my LG G3 cellphone's wide angle lens perspective is responsible for the false perception)

£37! Think I will stick with the HM5 pads at £12.50 ;}

Quote:
Thank you for your initial enquiry, we will not carry the cushions as a
stock line but will submit special orders as and when required, delivery
would be quoted at 7-10 working days.  The cushions are rather expensive at
£36.94 including delivery and vat per pair.  Should you wish to order please
contact our Sales Desk on 01434 32 32 32.

Kind regards

The crown jewel of this fine hp for me, is the reproduction of sub bass. Call it slam or visceral impact...whatever. I have rarely if ever heard bass done this well. I'd have to go all the way up to the lcd2.2 to get something this good.

The lcd2.2 is the better hp but at 3x the price and 1/3 the comfort that the x2 offers. The hd650 has been my go to hp for a few years now because I listen to a lot of vocal-centric music and very few hp's do vocals like the 650. But the 650 gets a 4/10 for bass impact. And the x2 gets a 9/10 on bass impact.

It will be interesting to see what Philips rolls out next!!

Just finished my Canare cable job with Amphenol 3.5mm golden tip jacks. I will be comparing 4 cables in my upcoming review for Audio Minor.   C.soon...  (hope in a week).

The cheapest one were bought from e-bay, about 3.55 USD; This custom Canare cable (cable and jacks bought from Redco Audio); original X2 cable and AudioMinor triple Cryoed Custom pure Copper X2 cable (tip to tip cryo process, including the Switchcraft golden tip jacks).

I think I'll be covering all the bases, from 3.55 USD to the high-end cable.

A modification experiment for the highs region (no final decision yet, mods are still in progress, but wanted to share):

Today while in the office I had some spare time to try some mods for X2 users. Some users reported some peaky or gritty highs before. I didn't have this problem, may be due to my sources or may be because of the combination of dozens of factors...

OK, I'll cut it short. I have tried some different materials to make a treble absorber and came to conclusion that "furniture foot protector adhesive felt" can eliminate some highest highs without making major alterations to the overall sound signature. Although I have to admit the mod  cuts down the clarity slightly. Also bass loosens very little bit...

My choice of the felt was 2.5 cm diameter, 2.5mm thick circular felt with a light adhesive applied on one side of it.

Furniture foot protector felt

The best thing: this mod is completely reversible and if applied properly wouldn't cause any harm to your X2.
Also you may want to experiment different materials and different diameter/thickness felts. Possibilities to reach to the desired signature is endless.

You may remove the earpads and install the felt directly on the center part of the speaker. You can also experiment directly sticking the discs on the earpad center (without removing it).

Disc applied on the center

This is how it looks like. I hope someone can start from here and find his/her modifications.

Please take my post as an idea only and share your own ideas/experiences in the future.

I will continue to experiment with different materials... Some cork adhesive discs are in the progress...

I received a couple of custom cables today to try out with the x2. I've only been able to try them out for about a half hour and then back to work. But I'll post impressions and pics later.

Thanks for that info. Do those hm5 pads just fit over the earcups as is, or did you need to do any mods first (just wondering exactly how you fit an oval peg onto a round hole)?
Cheers.

I've tried these and i think the X2 is a serious contender on it's price range. Easy to drive, extremely comfy, and very very good sound. Definitely my fav in under $500 range
