The PENON official thread

So here is my Totem review : https://iem.reviews/2021/01/10/penon-totem/

I took a bit of time as switching between cable and all the IEM pairings is quite time consuming, in fact more than IEM reviews!
But it's worth it, Totem is one of a kind :)
Did they change the color to match the Volt (blue instead of blue-green), and did they change out the hardware also? I like the looks more now.

thank you, is it different to Sphere?

Yes. Tuning wise, different from the Sphere.
There's a certain degree of warmth in the Spheres' mids, whereas the Fan is the most neutral of mids in my Penon IEMs.
With that being said, the presence region has an increased amount of crisp, details are fast but noticeable. We can keep up with pace...

The shells are vented, whilst the lipped nozzles are very sturdy.

I have been enjoying listening to my Volt for a week now. I was going to post some initial impressions later in the month but... something weird happened today. When I put the earphones in my ears today I noticed an annoying buzzing noise in the right monitor. The noise was louder and more pronounced when playing tracks with heavy bass. It sounds like a blown speaker.

Has anyone experienced anything similar with Penon earphones or any IEM?

I will be emailing Penon tomorrow but I wanted to hear your thoughts first.

Thanks

It’s early on in my listening to the Volt, and I’m still getting accustomed to the sound, but the best way I can describe the overall sound is “high resolution analog”. All the micro detail is there, but presented an a very natural and organic manner.

Some analogies: It’s like a high quality 40 megapixel digital image with only a little sharpening applied vs the same imagine with a lot of sharpening applied. “Sharpening” a digital image doesn’t increase resolution or detail, it just increases acutance, and gives the appearance of a sharper and more exciting image. While that can be nice, if overdone, its starts to look unnatural. While the Volt may at times seem to be lacking “bite”, upon further listening, I actually think it ultimately sounds more realistic. When listening to a band IRL, you hear the sounds as they reach you ear, along with echos, reverberations, and some smearing. You don‘t actually hear a band as if your ears were pressed right up to each instrument simultaneously, in a close miked fashion. That is exciting sounding, but not natural.

How would you describe the Volt versus the MEST/Monarch?

Just came this afternoon. I need more time later tonight to give a proper listen, but initially, the sound kind of reminds me of a more tonally balanced ISN D02. No exaggeration or overemphasis across the spectrum. Stage is noticeably wide. Has a lot of air across. Definitely has more sparkle than Orb, but having only one DD makes treble kind of plasticky, whatever that term is. Bass has more focus on sub than mid. Vocals transparent and clear sounding without any sibilance as @ehjie mentioned previously, not much warmth in the low mids as Orb does, but has enough body which doesn't make it come across as thin sounding the more you listen. Slightly forward sounding too. Let's see if burn in will change anything. Genre wise, this seems to bode well with most music in my collection (R&B, Hip-hop, EDM, Pop, Metal, Jazz, Acoustic, etc.).

Loving the case and the faceplate design! Well, everything seems to be of nice quality here. 🤩 Will add more sound impression soon as well as a comparison to ISN D02.

From vocals, ambient, post rock proved to be easy peasy for the Fan
Including one of my all time fav band below. Passed flying colours.

Now, challenging it to faster paced tracks...

Sounds interesting and I love the look of the Fans.

Any comparison between the Fans and the Orbs, ISN H40 and FiiO FH3?
Re: vs. Orbs
The Mids on the Fans are on the neutral side, not thin, not thick, simply neutral.
Forwardness, very similar to the Spheres.
The presence range more energetic. Hi hats, crashes abound and very audible, but - not overdoing it.
Sub bass same Orb DNA.
Layering, Instrument separation are as good as the Orbs...
