opinions on the DT770 '05 600 ohm?
Jul 1, 2009 at 8:50 PM Post #61 of 150
yeah, the bass is overwhelming and compressed on the Pro/250, hollow and blurry on the Premium/250...but on the Premium/600 it simply sounds very natural

I don't see how open phones could give that kind of bass tbh...you need back driver pressure, and the bass-reflex system works wonderfully on the 770(which is the most sold beyer phone).

but Skylab is also using leather pads on the 880, some ppl don't like that

Did he really say that? That's quite surprising as they have so much in common but 600Ohm DT880 takes to a completely different level, sort of supercharged DT770, HDTV versus VHS if I may say. Thus in my book 600Ohm DT880 belongs to a higher tier along with HD650, W5000, AD2000, SA5000, K702...
And DT770 is more comparable to K271S, DT48, ATH-A900, DT250, Denon D2000, HFI-780...

call me crazy, but i'd say that the standard DT880 belongs with the HD650 and 70x as it is in the 250 version already. And IMO is one of the better performers in that class.

I assume that would be with leather pads, as with velour they are pretty close with DT880 actually pulling ahead.

I don't use the velour pads at all. Using DT770 Manufacture Leather on the 770's, and JMoney leathers on the DT880's.

And so we are clear, I am a big fan of the DT880.

Why not? What is your reason for using leather pads instead of the velour earpads? More bass?

Jul 1, 2009 at 9:28 PM Post #65 of 150
IMO, the velours pads are too thin(that kills the headstage), itchy after a while and leather gives a "clearer"/more natural sound. I had to leave them under a pile of books for a few hours, though....initially they sounded bass shy to the utmost.

I find the sound with the velour pads unacceptably bright.

Thanks for all the input and advice.
So, I ordered the DT770 Manufaktur 600 ohm with leather earpads from the Beyer webshop.
Never spent so much money on a headphone: € 270,-

Hope they will be worth it.

you should have taken the leather headband! it's so much more comfy too

well, you have 1 week to send it back if you want...so it ain't so bad.

what is bad is the waiting time I think, it's a few weeks/months? that's the price of full customization I was told

anyway, these sound really great! it's well spent money IMHO.

I have always gotten mine max one week after I placed the order, not to much wait isnt it?

Tiemen, Gefeliciteerd, je zult niet teleurgesteld worden....

When you configure it with leather pads, do they also include velour?
Leather worked awful with DT880, even Beyer admitted that after a while and removed leather pads option from DT880 and DT990, yet some on this board still like how it sound, just be careful with such recommendations.

the genuine beyer leather pads are meant for the DT770/Premium...there's nothing to worry about. I heard they used to offer them for the 880, but they're not on the Manufaktur website anymore....and I pasted Peter Grooff's answer about that already, 770/880 pads are different so swapping them for one another is not such a good idea.

but yeah indeed putting lousy leather pads on mid-fi VHS cans sounds silly, now that you mention it

What sounds truly AWFUL are the leather "manufacture" pads you can buy on the US website, since those are the "Aviator" leather pads - those are just awful sounding on the DT770/880/990.
