I consulted with the guys from surf cables about a balanced cable for the Oppo PM3 that works with the Onkyo DP X1. They offered this solution:
http://www.surfcables.com/products/speaker-cable-other-products?variant=13587387715

They also mentioned that the Onkyo and A&K pin outs are different. Unfortunately for me I ordered a balanced cable from Ultimate Ears for my customs that is supposed to work with the A&K balanced and I was assuming it was going to work with the Onkyo

I hope I can return the cable to  UE and get a new balanced cable for my customs that works with the Onkyo.
I checked the USPS tracking today and the DAP is already in my city waiting for delivery, so I won't be able to test the balanced out when I receive it. Oh well.

Surf makes great cables. The 3rd cable pictured on that page is the very cable John made for my PM-3 and Pono.

The balanced pinout was one of the 1st things discussed in this thread. Afaik, the Onkyo and A&K pinouts should be the same. Haven't confirmed this myself but why would Onkyo go with a different setup than the (almost) standard A&K 2.5mm?

I hope you are right. I was not ready to spend more money for a cable for my costumes. Oppo's and customs are arriving the 30th, I hope the DAP arrives right before that. How long does it take for surf cables to make and deliver their products?

Surf is pretty fast but we're still within the holiday season.

All of mine (around 3 or 4 orders including a re-cable) arrived within a week or less.

AFAIK, the A&K and DP-X1 both use 2.5mm 4pole TRRS wired in R-/R+/L+/L-
This can be confirmed by Onkyo's site and the AK240/380 user manuals respectively:
https://translate.google.com.sg/translate?hl=en&sl=ja&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.jp.onkyo.com%2Faudiovisual%2Fheadphone%2Fdpx1%2Fhigh_reso.htm
http://www.central-manuals.com/instructions_manual_user_guide_media_player/iriver.php

Perhaps you should inquire further for their explanation on how the pinouts might be different.
They might be aware of something we do not.

EDIT: Got the wiring configuration wrong.

After the SW update, I find that when playing .dsf albums, occasionally a track would not complete, stutters, and moves to the next track in that album. I tend to listen to complete albums. This never happens with FLAC albums and certainly not before the update.

try disabling upsamping and/or reduce the lock range adjustment and try again ?

Hi,

Upsampling has never been set to On. I reduced the lock range to Wide and it is still the same.

Personally I've never liked DAPs to have too many adjustments and settings to fiddle with. These albums that have these problems have played properly on ZX-2 and D-100.

Thanks anyway.

Surf Cables answered my question tonight:
"Hi, good news, we have been waiting for our Onkyo DAC just like most people, but it does look like the 2.5mm TRRS pinouts from A&K will match Onkyo from what we can tell of the published materials online- just waiting to confirm with actual products.  So you should be ok with the UE cables for both.
We will let you know if anything changes when our DAC arrives.
Sorry about the earlier message, at that time we were still waiting for the specs."

I will order the balanced cable for the Oppo PM -3 tonight.

I bought a balanced cable from a friend who had been using it with his AK240. It works fine with my Onkyo.

Wait, so we can't use the balanced cables that work with the AK players?
