Just received my cheap Chinese 8$ ipad camera connection kit / sd card reader / usb hub combo ordered through ebay.
Turned Fiio X3 to usb dac mode, connected the fiio to the camera connection kit with the usb cable and connected the kit to my ipad 3 through the 30pin dock connector.
The fiio x3 dispayed its receiving 44khz/24bit from the ipad... And that it is charging itself from the ipad... Plugged in the headphones (clurrently Philips x1) and it sounds great as usual!
This works because the Chinese camera connection kit is misrepresenting usb power consumption, tricking the ipad into thinling a low power consuming dac is connected while the fiio in fact drains it ... Not extremely fast though, about 1% per say 3 minutes which is acceptable.
But it would be even greater if the X3 could have a setting to turn off usb charging - I don' t know if that would be possible? If that was possible, the X3 might even work with an iphone!
Now why would one want to do that?
The answer is Spotify!!! And all other streaming services! For those wanting better sq than spotify i can recommend quobuz - quobuz offers an ipad app with a cd quality flac streaming service for 19€ per month. i'm just at this moment running spotify on the ipad connected to the X3 while typing this on the ipad - it works! But running spotify consumes power for the wlan connection on the ipad plus the drain on the X3... So a usb dac without charging option would be phantastic.
i might be able to solve this by connecting the camera kit to a usb charger but that solution would not be very portable and require a rather long usb cable if i want to sit comfortable on my sofa...
By the way one stupid question - what are the two bars at the bottom of the usb dac display of the X3 - is that balance for left/right channel?
The fiio x3 is running 3.22 beta fw, the ipad runs ios7.
If you want to try this with your ipad mini / ipad air you'll need to purchase a lightning to 30 pin connector in addition - or perhaps there are already lightning camera kits that underreport usb piwer consumption - I don't know.
