i happen to own two ipods, each have the same issue when i use the adapter on them. i believe this is a very simple issue that i am somehow overlooking. may we start from the beginning?

i bought this flash drive http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002WE4H8I/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 which is supposed to work according to the list of cf's which work. i have bought the tarkan adapter from the official website.

when both items were here, i assembled them and put it in disk mode. then i plugged it into my computer.
itunes did not recognize it, neither did my computer. however, when i plug it into another computer it said installing drivers, and device is ready to use, then it disconnected itself and crashed, just like usual.

Its possible then that the CF card either isn't making good contact with the connectors, or that the adapter is defective.  One thing you can try is plugging the adapter into a 1.8" zif USB enclosure, but I doubt you have one just lying around.  The other may be that the CF card itself is defective, if you haven't already tried it.  I doubt its the ribbon cable or the logic boards since two ipods showed the same behavior.  I'd try reseating the card into the adapter and going from there.

A few questions:

I was wondering if you knew of the best/most cost efficient 128GB/256GB SSD's for the 6th generation 80GB Classic? Also, what would be the best battery for it? I know that there are 850mAh batteries for the "fat" versions, would this work on mine with the bigger backplate and some padding for the SSD?

Thanks!

EDIT: Thank you for the information about SSD with ZIF profil.

I've read more on this thread and find that it may be possible to use this adapter and plug a mSATA SSD from Crucial (in comment they said that 256gb works fine). I would like to know if it's true and, where to find an 128gb Crucial SSD powered by 3,3V and not 5V (I guess 5V won't work) ?

EDIT2: Will an 128gb or 256gb SSD go into a 30gb housing ?

I contacted Crucial last week to ask about mSATA voltages and they told me that all M4 are 3.3 volts and the newer M500 are all 5 volts.

Another good looking mSATA, which has not yet been tested, is the new MyDigitalSSD  BP4 mSATA's.  They are getting good reviews and are a bargain, at $89 for 120gb and $169 for 256gb, both are 3.3 volt.  Note I have not tried these yet, but don't see any issues.

Any size mSATA should fit the 30gb housing.

Hope this helps.

So I'm going to buy the adapter mSata > ZIF, is there another one good out there ?
Which SSD do I need to buy: 128go from Crucial M4 or other brand ? As I live in europe, I am looking for an cheap mSSD with 256gb...

Another thing, I've read that there is no way to make Rockbox work with an mSata SSD, is that real? It only work with a ZIF SSD, am I right?

Thank you for all of you answer, I do know that they may had already been asked on this thread...

Okay, here is my "iPod Classic Ultimate" project. I've got a few questions regarding some of the parts I'm using a 6th Gen 80GB Classic:

Faceplate: http://www.ebay.com/itm/iPod-Classic-6th-7th-Gen-Face-Plate-Replacement-Front-Housing-SILVER-NEW-/140970618394?pt=US_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item20d280ee1a

Backplate: http://irestore.com/6g-ipod-classic-back-plate-replacement-kit-160gb (Can I swap this out properly from the slim model? I also want to use Scotch-Brite to give it a 'brushed' look.)

Battery:  http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fbbs2.erji.com%2Fread.php%3Ftid%3D1144014&act=url (Where can I get a 1500mAh battery and ensure that it will use the same connectors/pins as the 580mAh one?)

Click Wheel: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Ipod-Classic-Black-Click-Wheel-with-Center-Button-/170934137220?pt=US_Cell_Phone_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item27cc77f184

SSD: http://www.amazon.com/KingSpec-128GB-1-8-5mm-KSD-ZF18-6-128MS/dp/B008NAI0YC/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top (I saw in a review that somebody used this with their 6th gen 80GB model. Is this confirmed working by anyone else?)

Worked in my 5th gen 30gb, and all the research I've done points to it working on the 6th gen models.  The 6th gen 80gb can take SSDs just fine, but I believe its incompatible with dual platter drives (the 240gb ones).  You should be fine with that SSD.

My next project will be dyimodding a 5.5g with this 256GB mSATA drive . I decide not to wait for the Rockbox issue to be fully resolved (if possible). As much as I hate iTunes, the crappiest software ever, I have to compromise given the 256GB and freed space which may allow me to test some other internal caps for my dyimod.

Wow, that seems a lot cheaper than ZIF drives!

So, is it 100% impossible for mSATA drives to work on 6th gen 80GB iPods? If not, I guess I should start investing in a used 5.5g.

Oh, I see.

I hope it works with both adapters.

Don't think the blue one (Type 2) will work as you have already tried it without success, but I will give it a try anyway. The green card should be working. I ordered it from China and it looks like the ones your guys bought from Amazon.

I doubt I will receive the mSATA before I leave for a long trip this weekend as Amazon still shows option for cancellation - meaning they have not shipped it out yet.
