Starting to make sense now.

5.5G 80GB - any hd/ssd/msata/cf upgrade (with relevant adapters)

5.5G 30GB - same as above?

6.5G 120GB - only like for like upgrade

7G 160GB - only 240GB upgrade (with new back and batt)

If you're only talking platter hard drives (remember, this is the SSD mod thread, not the HD mod thread)

5G may be upgraded to 256GB SSD

There is a 5.5G 30GB iPod Video (late 2006). I have bought a 128GB CF and a Tarkan adapter since they are reported to work with 5.5/6/7G iPod's. I will test it with them all and see what works and what doesn't.

I own an 5G iPod video with a 160 gb drive installed and it works perfectly.

Their is a difference, their is such a thing as a 5.5g 30gb. I've had all 4 models of the 5/5.5G and this is what I found with a 240gb HDD. Both 5G models did not work with it, both 5.5G models did.

That's full capacity. It's the difference between gigabytes (how bytes on the storage device are counted by the storage device maker) and gibibytes (how bytes on the storage device are counted by the firmware).

but then the one that was previously 30GB will have ram problems comparing to the other 60/80GB's right? (HDD)

RAM:
5G 30gb iPod Video Board: 32mb
5G 60gb iPod Video Board: 32mb
5.5G 30gb iPod Video Board: 32mb
5.5G 80gb iPod Video Board: 64mb
 
For some reason though, their is a difference between each of the board in the 5.5G line as opposed to the previous models of iPod Video's. If the 5.5g board and the 5g board of the 30gb iPod Video's were the same, then you'd be able to have the Search feature on both devices, but you can't. Only on the 5.5G iPod Video's can you have that feature on the stock OS. 
 
all 5.5G iPod Videos can handle a 240gb HDD, but obviously one will handle it better than the other. Also, I only have tested this with the stock OS, not Rockbox

I know the wolfsson are really nice DAC's,but would love to have a similar unit with a nice HD display for video...

No point, services like plex allow streaming and also mobile wifi connected hard drives are used with android devices

Android phones don't have hard drives.  They have embedded memory chips, which makes them impossible to upgrade.  Phones with card slots allow expansion (up to 64GB, at the present time), and phones with USB OTG (On-The-Go) enabled can make use of external storage.
 
My dream is an Android device with massive on-board memory, at least one (but preferably two) micro-SD slot(s), a good audio section, and a decent output stage.  But, the trend is toward less memory (with the exception of the newly released HTC One, which is available in 64gb), and no card slot(s).  And, with the push towards Beats-type hype, there's no thought given to premium sound.  The providers are try to push subscribers into cloud services, more restrictive data plans, and bigger profits for themselves.  But, I digress....
