seller said it fits without the need of a new backplate.

and yeah is not an upgrade but rather a fix to my broken ipod, I was close to go for the 32 gb compact flash card. but 120 gb at 60$, cant beat that.

My only worry now is that some sellers dont do a good job packing harddrives, and UPS, fedex and alikes usually beat up packages like crazy

Thread bump!

Any news of anyone successfully installing the 256GB SSD drive aside from ALO?

I just ordered some parts to fix my old 5g 60GB ipod video. Figured that if I need to crack it open, might as well get an SSD in it and imod it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Bump again....

Has anyone tried any of the 240-256GB ssd's on these ipods with any success?

I too would like to hear some success stories regarding this issue.  I have an 80 gb 5.5g ipod that has been full for some time now.  It was full before I started to create a lossless version of my library so you can imagine how much space it takes up now.  Hopefully one day we will all have the ability to carry our large uncompressed music libraries at a reasonable price.

Looks like no hope for the low voltage 240GB+ PATA ZIF ssd's to ever come down in price. They are just too specialty of a product to go down in price i think. I'm not using an ipod anymore I got a cowon j3 32GB + 10x 32GB micro sdhc + JH-16 Pro's and the micro sdhc cards fit nicely in the jh16 pro carrying case. Plus i get well over 55 hours of active playing time so like 1 charge a week. It's not a terrible solution, writing to the cards out of my computers card reader is much faster then writing to a player over usb and I can carry 340GB of flacs with me that play native in the player.

I'll probably get more sd cards cause I have 900GB of flac but the 1/3 I have on cards is really the main albums I listen to. The other 2/3's is mainly just the other albums by bands I like but albums i dont really like cause I like to get full discographys of bands i like and their ends up bein albums i dont care for but just want to have.

I'm just waiting to save some money for the ibasso pb2 and then recable my jh16's to balanced. Then I think I will be fully happy with my portable set up. (well until I can afford a pair of LCD3's but that's not gonna happen for a long time, plus the lcd3 isnt exactly portable). Yes the ibasso pb2 and not the sr71b reason being the jh16's already have enough power on the low end the sr71b have a darker sound. The pb2 (which has a more neutral to sparkly sound) is a better match for the already darkish jh16 pro's and its half the price of the sr71b for basically equal SQ just different signature. Also the pb2 has a higher voltage swing.

Sorry got off on my tangent. Just updating where im at and why I know longer need to ssd mod my ipod but I hope this thread lives on to do well for others.

Yea I need to change my sig I know

I already bit the bullet on the CF route, but does anyone know if these will fit with a zif-50 pin adapter?

I have a 20gb 4th gen, so I would have needed to buy a new backplate (for the 40gb), but I didn't know if it would be worth it unless the adapter would fit inside. They're normally on dealextreme for 5USD.

Well...I just bit the bullet on the Super Talent 128GB SSD for my 5g 60GB Fat iPod. If it works, I will rockbox it and use FLAC. Hope to use it as my office rig along with the O2 and my Paradox headphones.

I hope to have everything up and running this coming weekend. I'll keep you guys posted.

Well...SSD hard drive arrived today!!!

After a battery upgrade, faceplate upgrade, screen upgrade and SSD install.....IT WORKS!!!!

I have 116GB useable on the SSD and with the added Rockbox installation, I really couldn't be happier!

(Hi all...)

I've been following this thread, as I am about to do the exact same thing. I have a question / clarification for you, if that's ok.

There are a couple of Super Talent 120GB SSDs, the ZT2 (FZM28GW18P), but also the cheaper (and slower) Masterdrive (FZM28GF18H). The odd thing is that several vendor sites I have checked list the ZT2 as 5V, including the one I linked (and here's another). Can you confirm that it was indeed the ZT2 that you used?

I suspect it's a copy/paste mistake by these sites, as the official spec sheet says 3.3V. Still, would be nice to have it confirmed.

Ta very much :).
