How hard is it to do the mod? It's the 30G model. I saw some of you managed to do both the CF mod + audio upgrade w/o losing the stock backplate.
I notice that with the 5.5G I feel like I have to turn the volume up a little more to get acceptable midrange/bass (usually a bad sign, although in this case I'd say it's still listenable), but even then it's not exactly the same/as musical. It still feels like there's something subtle missing. The best way to describe it is that normally there's a sweet spot where you know it just sounds rich and musical, and it still sounds good, but it's a bit off and not quite there.
The mod is doable with some practice on a dead board or a practice board. The fat back plate will allow more internal space thus more options to try different caps. Without using any internal caps, a CF mod with a thin back plate is all you need.
Yes after I have been listening to my DMod's these days, I do feel the stock 5g's sound a little bit thin and lack of bass. The softness in the bass could be due to the bass roll off as often described by some head-fi'ers. Also, if you have not done so, you should rockbox the stock 5g and see if any improvements. I personally noticed improvements when I rockboxed my stock about 2 yrs ago for the first time. Also play 16bit/44kHz lossless if that's not what you are doing.
The stock classic 7g does have a more powerful amp than the stock 5g.
