I saw these mentioned earlier in this thread.  Would they work with my 5.5 gen (80gb)?  (probably getting the max mAh battery to deal with the power drain)  Seems to be the most cost effective method right now.

It's safe to say the 5.5g/80gb model will work with any drive if that drive has been tested with an iPod video. Just keep in mind the mSATA doesn't work with Rockbox and it may not be as power efficient as the other options (CF and SDXC).  cmarti and others may chip in on the stability (freeze, lag, etc) of using the mSATA's.

True, one of the things that bother me the most is the song skipping, then you are using the iPod and then it shuts down without a warning because of low power. That's why I came back to my iPod Mini and the 7th Gen Classic.

That sucks.  Thought I found an affordable option.

Unless you really want a 200gb+ SSD drive, the 128GB SDXC option is quite affordable. If you don't mind buying used ones, Amazon sometimes have the used SDXC's priced very low thru warehouse deals. Last year I bought a pair of used 128GB SDXC's for less than USD100 from Amazon. They work flawlessly.

To my ears the sdxc does not sound on par with the CF, but I can't speak for others. You may not notice the difference playing 320kbps or anything. Perception to sound could differ from individual to individual.

Will be selling my Gen 5 (SD Flash conversion) and Gen 6.5 (stock 120GB HDD) soon if anyone in UK is interested.

I have been playing the rockboxed iPod with the 256GB CF since last Friday. The card has been fully loaded with only 1gb free. So far I have not encountered a single hiccup. The battery performs normally as with other CF cards.

I will probably end up with having a couple more of these cards.

What would be the cheapest 256gb compact flash card available that is completely compatible (with 5.5 video)?  Seems to be the wisest choice to invest a few extra dollars in a CF.

"Cheap" "256" and "Compact Flash Cards" are not words that sit comfortably together unfortunately.  It seems that the one Dminor has linked to works and works well.  I would order that card but being in the uk I expect to get whacked for tax (unless they mark it down) which rather puts me off the idea.

Which one would this be?  I looked in previous pages, but didn't find any links.
