  $492 for 256GB? I'll pass for now.

We could already go for the ZIF instead and pay $300 (or less) at the moment. KingSpec from China probably sucks but that's only 1,439 RMB / 240 bucks plus shipping for 256GB.

Actually I've been using a kingspec 128 gig in my old iriver 120 (too big for daily use now) and it's fine.  Rockbox works on it as well.

I tried Rockbox on my iMod, but I just didn't like the UI. Just so different then the iPod. I wanted to like it but it also seemed slower. I wanted to like it. But my iMod just has so many issues disconnecting when transferring files, that once I got all my files finally transferred, I didn't want to mess with it. 12,000+ files. Sadly most are not high quality tracks since I've been collecting music since the late 90s on mp3.

Now to start collecting funds for the pricey 256gb CF card :p

I have a question guys.

I have heard people complain that the biggest issue with the iPod Classic 5.5 gen with Rockbox was that it was very slow and that the battery life was bad (this being the iPod's fault, not Rockbox). I was wondering if I performed the mod on the iPod where I removed the hard drive and replaced it with an Tarkan CF-to-SD card would improve the performance and battery life with Rockbox installed? I don't want to have to wait a few seconds (or possibly more) to skip from track-to-track or album-to-album and I would like to have a battery that lasts as long as possible.

My other option would be to just get an iPod Classic 7th generation and Rockbox it, because I heard that the speed and battery life of that model is greatly improved. Should I just go that route anyway and still do the CF-to-SD card for hard drive swap on the iPod 7th generation, or would the iPod Classic 5.5 gen greatly improve in performance with the mod I suggested?

Thanks in advance for any and all help given!

I can't comment on the 7th Gen. I have a 5.5G. But that's the one of the big reasons I didn't stick with Rockbox. I have a CF to SD adapter (128GB SD card) and it was laggy and slow to respond. :frowning2:

Thanks for this info. This is the kind of stuff that I am looking for before I make an investment that I may regret. If others could chime in on the performance of this mod with Rockbox on the 7th gen iPod that would be great. I really want something with a bigger and better screen than the SanDisk Sansa Clips that I can play FLAC files on and possibly Rockbox. It doesn't look like I have many other options though. I'm also trying not to spend a ton of money, as the total cost of everything for this mod would have cost me a little over $100.00.

Any suggestions would be great as well.

No, it works but when I was first modding my iPod Mini to 128GB I did it with the CF to SD adapter and the transfer speed and battery life was inferior to just using the CF card. I feel like there's a bottleneck in the CF to SD adapter and also it consumes power, power that drain your battery faster.

What's the speed like with the normal firmware?

Hmm, that's interesting.  Did you ever track down the source of the drain?  Was just wondering if the cf adapters could have been improved since you last used one.

Thanks.

I like to keep it simple and use less part(s) if possible. More parts could potentially bring problems and less efficiency.

Also to my ears the CF's sound better than the DSXC's on my diymod's, not mentioning CF more durable than the micro cards.

I believe the so called "high-end" daps all use the micro cards to cut down cost (for more profits).

Dropped more than 230GB's to the CF card (less than 5GB free now) and the iPod remains very responsive with no signs of slowing down or being sluggish. In fact, this may be the most responsive one of all the ipods in my possessions. Very impressed by the card's performance so far.

Now I need to have someone make a custom amp wallet made of quality leather. The gears deserve something not just practical but also stylish. :)
