I had the s3, don't remember anything special about it, had the HTC m8,m9, and Samsung s6, HTC had good sound but not as good as a $50-100 dollar player, I guess if you play with the programs+ use a good media player it gets pretty good but then batteries don't last longer then around 3-4 hours and at that point you need to carry and extra phone or a power bank, I got tired of all that, had 2 phones and a powerbank then i gave in and got a decent player, now my phone last all day on one charge and my player last 10 hours, less stuff to carry and don't need a charger on the road or outside the house anymore ( and a LG v20 goes for about $700-800 around here, a v30 goes for 1000 for that price you can get a real serious player and still buy a used Samsung s6)

I said the same thing lol its was 2017 why would it not stand out for what it is? You finally got it have you updated firmware yet? If not, theirs a huge sound change in version 5242018 latest...
I am on firmware V20180504.Is this the latest firmware? Any way my impressions is changed.Device is now burned for more than 50 hours.Sound quality is good.Better than my fiio x5 1gen+e12a combo and slightly better than my lg v20.But i still prefer v20 for its airier presentation. If vocals were a little distant then fa1 will be perfect.Worth the money paid for its sound quality alone.
But OS is a mess.when i play dsd files and then skip to flac there is a serious pitch issue like music is fast forwarding.I have to restart the device everytime to solve this problem. Most album arts didnt load. There is a click noise when i play dsd 128.Playing music files from sd card and then internal memory and backforth is very laggy.I wish Fa1 developers should add a gain option on the next update.

For that price smart d200+ is an option and in my country you can only get a used American locked version for $ 400

So what’s the best sounding bargain out there at the moment? I’m thinking of getting
F.Audio XS02

It looks good. I got it's brother the FA 1 a while back and it really does sound good. I used to have the precursor to the XS02, the XS01. It sounded really good but it's screen was too small and hard to read. They've upgraded that for the XS02.

Are these the best in the Chinese market? It's pure sound I'm concerned with. I can cope with a weird UI.

I currently own Xs-02 and I'm getting ReaL sound with these amps I'm using, yes real sound. Right now this player sounds at the $800 range which is freakin awesome for its currently asking price. I'd get it and then you can hunt for the worlds greatest single opa amp lol.

After seeing guywholikeshifi's post.... anyone have thoughts on the audio-s1 ?

https://penonaudio.com/f.audio-s1.html
I have the s1, it's worth the money, much better purchase them my wife's fiio x1 ii ( crashing, freezing paperweight) the s1 sound is very good, clean, I felt the bass was slightly rolled but it has a good eq and it was easily fixed( I am a bit of a bass head, sometimes) battery last forever (30 hours) and works like and amp, I didn't get the Bluetooth version but I did read it had a problem with connecting, but in general I enjoy it alot when I am on the go or have long trips and can't charge much, otherwise I use my zishan dsd or an amped zishan z3

Thanks! However your reply opened up a few more questions.... the Z3 and DSD have been on my list too, you see, i really like the walnut v2, but I'd like a display of some sort, and even a hold button if possible, (or lock button, to prevent from accidentally pushing buttons in my pocket). I know the S1 doesnt have a lock,b ut have read teh buttons really need to be deliberately pushed so i wouldnt be worried about that.

ANYWAYS, you have experience with the S1, DSD and Z3..... would you suggest one over the other two????

thanks!
