If you really like the W4R but wish it had a little more bass, get the W40.  Total no brainer.

I thought the W40 was the W4R with a cosmetic makeover. I thought they performed identically.

Been posting about this, have both (W40 on loan), doing a review fo an audiophile magazine, they DON'T sound identical, W40 wider soundstage, better detail, better bass...

Without having them side by side, to me the 2 obvious differences are more bass with W40 and the overall presentation is closer, more intimate.

Everything else seems the same to me (from memory).

Definitely better than SE535.  Not even a fair fight anymore IMHO.

I have the UE 900 and I am looking into buying the W40 sometime in next month or two. How is the W40 for Hip-Hop heads like me? I love bass, but I do love details and clarity that I am able to get with my UE900. The W40 packs six-drivers so does that mean there is more clarity compared to the UE900 which packs four?

I don't own the UE900s so i can't comment on the differences but the w40s only packs four drivers like the UE900, not six.

The W40 only features 4 drivers which is the same number of drivers as the UE900. If you're talking about 6 drivers I guess you're referring to the W60?

I've heard both W4R and UE900. If assuming W4R sounds the same as W40, then I would say UE900 edges slightly in clarity.

A guy few posts above said they don't sound similar. How is the bass comparison?

Yes, it was already confirmed by a few people that W40 doesn't sound the same as W4R, and it has improved bass quantity.

Regarding UE900 vs W40 especially for hip-hop head, as you describe yourself - no question about W40 having an advantage of better bass, warmer sound, and overall smoother non-fatigue listening experience over extended period of time.  You will still get all the details and transparency, and vocals sounds great!  Beside, W40 has a better build quality and more ergonomic design.  Nobody knows what's going on with UE900 since it looks like they are being phased out with either replacement or something else.  The whole UE900 thread has been nothing but complains rather than appreciation.

Thanks for the reply. The bass really does lack in the UE900 even compared to my Klipsch S4 at times.

"Even?" The S4 is one of the most ridiculously bassy IEMs I've ever heard...if you're looking for that kind of bass, you want a dynamic driver IEM like the FX850 or IE80.

the S4s were seriously bassy, and i totally share the same sentiments. to me there is something of dynamic-driver bass that just edges out the BA equivalent...in terms of the roundness of tone and the amount of oomph it packs
