New Ultrasone Edition 15
May 18, 2020 at 3:17 AM Post #106 of 174
Size is 7.5cm x 5cm (measured in the middle).. Which is more or less same as the Heddphone 7cmx5.5cm .. and feeling both tight but comfortable and makes possible to move up and down the head (in a train or plane seats, it's important the headphones doesn't fall down when taking things up or down un bags or breifcase)
For me too, my earlobes have to be in contact with the back of pads to get the full frequency range as measured with miniDSP ears, but it's touching without being uncomfortable at all.

In fact, I had to use them a few times more than15/20 hours flight/train during intercontinental Trips. I felt the Ultrasone Ed15 more comfortable than the Sony Z7M2 which are touching a bit my earlobes but with the inside of the cans and not the pads like teh Ultrasone... and Z7M2 are easily falling down of my head easily when moving or when I go somewhere in the plane or train (headphones still on my head).

Is the S-Logic sound VERY dependant on positioning of the headphones then?

The drivers are placed really low, when wearing the Edition 15's in a way that my ears are not tounching the pads I get a little too much indirect sound (Or not enough direct sound), resulting in a bit of a mid-range dip, I'm guessing my earlobes are blocking the drivers at this point. Tightening the headband a single click raises them enough to remedy this, but my earlobes do touch the pads at this point. (For me, not in an uncomfortable way)

I am not one to write extensive reviews , and I did not pay full price (Demonstration model with 55% off, being Dutch I am apparently sensitive to sales), but I am very pleased with them: Build quality is a step above similarly priced models from other companies , with premium materials , magnetically attached pads and VERY solid Lemo connectors. (These should be an industry standard IMHO)
It appears to me Ultrasone went all-out on quality parts and materials, with no apparent corner-cutting, which is unfortunately not something you see everyday in todays market.
The sound signature is very nice, with "nice" being the key word: These are not "hear-it-all-Diana-Krall" Audiophile headpones. While they certainly do manage to shine with great recordings, their real strenght lies in the way they handle lesser recordings: 1950's Bernard Hermann in mono? No problem, sounds lush and detailed, no harshness, great tone and the S-Logic actually makes mono very listenable. (But this might be a personal thing due to ear-shape etc.,S-logic might not work equally for everyone)
The same applies to poorly recorded prog or garage-type psychedelica, they just sound "right", even when the recording is less than stellar.
This unfortunatelty is not something all headphones manage to do.
They are more of a music-lovers headphone than an audiophile one, and I love them for it.
I also really like their fit: They are very light and clamp just enough so I can reach down to open a drawer, or even walk to my CD rack to get the next CD (Bring on the "Boomer" comments please) without them falling off my head or even shift around.

I've not always been a fan of Ultrasone's headphones but these, to me at least, are almost perfect for everyday use, and with every other brand raising their prices over the last few years, Ultrasone's top end offerings all of a sudden appear to be almost good value. I would think that by replacing the wood with resin/plastic and the leather with pleather, ditching the case and extra cable and lowering the price, Ultrasone might have a real winner with this platform.

I would say Yeeeeesss ..
When I try to optimize my PEQ configuration (Neutron Player), clearly It takes a time to find the right position on my MiniDSP Ears to get the highest level in all frequencies (from 20hz to 24kz). And in this case too, the back of the artificial head earlobes have to be in contact with the cans.

But, for listening music in real life, it's not that critical, I need to push them a bit in front and in that situation backside of my earlobes are touching a bit the cans. It's not uncomfortable at all in any cases (less than my Z7M2).
For a month, I use at home a brand new Heddphone which is much easier to put on my head and a bit more articulated to equalize the pressure perfectly around my ears (luckily because it's 730g and not 325g like the ultrasone) .

I would say, I have found my perfect combo with the Ultrasone Ed15 Veritas and the Heddphone. I imagine the Ultrasone Ed 15 open, would have been nice too in place of the Heddphone, I was more attract by the hype around the AMT technology, and I would have surely gone to the open Ed15 if the Heddphone was not so impressive too and a bit cheaper.

Thanks for the replies guys, very interesting stuff! I'm a little torn between the Veritas and the open Edition 15 at the moment but I have the opportunity to give one or the other a try, which I obviously need to do!

I would be interested to read your return, if you can try both, to tell us if there are noticeable differences between open and closed back Ed15 !
Basically, I have chosen the Veritas option, because I have (had till covid19) many hours a week of flights/train/etc and my pleasure was really increased going from the Sony Z7M2 to the Ed15 Veritas.
I wonder if I didn't have to use my headphone in public, I would still have chosen the Veritas. I just imagine the Ed15 open back should maybe even better, though low frequencies should be less in front.

Hi everyone, I'm considering between ED5 limited, tribute 7, and ed15 veritas. I mostly listen to classical music, vocal, and jazz sometimes. Which can is more suitable for me? I think tribute 7 is the smallest can that is not very big on my head. Thanks!

I personally did not like the Tribute 7. In my opinion if you get a used Edition 9 they are much better. I loved them but could not ware them for long time due to the smaller cups. If the cups were the size of the M50 I would have never sold them.

The most beautiful and best sounding Ultrasone I have ever tried is the Edition 25 Jubilee. My problem was the price ..... $6,000.

I own the Edition 15 (open) and really like them and much more comfortable than the Edition 9 or Tribute 7. It is a very good all around headphone.

Edition 5 can have an issue with the IEM-style connectors causing the sound to drop out when moving your head.
Mine did this straight out of the box with all cables included and just returned it for a refund the next day.
Afterwards I read this is a common problem.

I read about that too. The mini LEMO on the Edition 15 are really nice.

Thank you guys. I'm thinking about ed 15 closed-back but it looks huge on head in pictures online. I sight get the ed 15 veritas in the future. I might as well get the ultrasone panther to amp it. Thanks for all your feedback.

I am sure they are the same size as the open back I have and they are not big at all. I have bigger headphones.

I own and use them a lot and the veritas 15 is light 320g and compact (less volume than Z7M2) ..but they need some EQ (like loads of headphones) to be fully enjoyable. I basically don't need any additional amp to move them. It's my complementary headphone for travel purposes or office beside my Heddphone at home.
I can warmly recommend them as closed headphones.
