Hello everybody. This is Martin. I am actually a speakers person. But ever since my daughter came into this world, I have not been able to use my speakers much especially in the night when she's asleep. As such, I am looking to get good headphones. Thank God for this forum. Hoping to get a wealth of knowledge here. Thanks in advance all!

Hi Martin, welcome to head-fi. If you are looking for a pair of headphones, that sound great and do not leak out music, I recommend going to MrSpeaker's .com and get yourself MrSpeaker's Alpha Dog's or Alpha Prime's.. These cans sound great and are on sale. Be well.

Hi Reddog. Wow. Thanks for the recommendation. I will certainly check it out.

Actually, I do have a question.

I would like to get a headphone that's works for movies, music and use with the smartphone.

Are there any good ones around?

But I also heard that I can use good Bluetooth headphones for movies. All I need to do is just to get a Bluetooth transmitter that transmits the codec the headphone supports?

Is this right? In this way, I can get the best of both worlds? Thanks in advance!

Hello, I have never used Bluetooth wireless, so I do not have any pertinent information for you. The only wireless headphone, I have read up on is the momentum 2. I would read up on them, and see if the momentum 2's are what you seek. Do a search on wireless headphones, and see what wireless headphones pop up.

I have a question... I'd like to add a list of my gear to my profile but the "Create a new list" button doesn't appear anywhere. Maybe it gets activated after the mods figure out I'm a real person and not a bot....

Maybe you do have to post a certain amount first, but the button option is "Edit Community Profile" on your profile page.

Really looking forward to join this forum. I use headphones at the Gym, and of course at home. Stax and Grado are the preferences. One of the ideas is to modify the SRM-007tii, I know for sure the WIMA MKP10 is not up the job - and this is probably also the case for the 6CG7 from EH :)

The only bad thing though is the fact that my Stax is so much better than my Martin Logan and my Devialet.

G'day all, from the Land Down Under.

I live in a smallish town in Western Australia, with 5.5k people. I'm Ex-Military and live off a Mil Pension. My body and mind is broken, which gives me all day every day at home.

I'm a self taught, iOS Developer, and Web developer, and now learning Back-End Ruby on Rails, Java and Python. Years ago, sitting in a mates place, I had his Grado's on, and since then have always wanted a pair. I have had a pair of Marley ZION™ near earphones, and lately I have been getting ear infections, and has been uncomfortable inserting them into my ear, so my Bday last week, I sold off 2 old iPhones, and purchased a pair of Grado SR325e's and am extremely happy.

I'm looking for some more info, because now I live out of my iMac, and would love to get a nice Headphone Tube AMP to sit beside it, and listen while I work. I have received so much information from this forum, and think it will be a new home, for all things Music . . .  Because, thats why are all really here, isn't  it

Cheers, and hope to make some new acquaintances  . . . .

Hello to all,

What can I say, I am a musician. I like music of all kinds.

I also have a small fortune invested in purchased music over the years. What exactly did I buy, when I paid for that CD?

Now the record labels want to re sell you, your' same catalogue of music , only this time with the promise of delusions of grandure, with Hi Definition music files.

Neil Young seems to want to cater to fast broadband fast downloads of HD Pono files that are safely locked from stealing eyes.

But why buy the same music again from the same music source, I-tunes, etc, if you already have a hard CD copy.

I surely don't like the more recent music releases, & the younger generation surely don't like the music from the 70's

So I am looking for the best alternative to tossing out my old collection, & replacing it with my old collection upsampled to industry standard HD.

There is always something out there that you know, & can help everyone reading these threads, to learn how to find a way around ASCAP/BMI & RIAA from stealing any more money from me for the same exact music now being sold at Hi Res, when it should have been sold in high res in the first place....Or was it?

There must be something to the upsampling idea.

I'm here to learn. Teach me what you know about the art of re sampling already existing music files into truely high res super files.

Thanks. I'm listening with bated breath.

I am not sure about the CD company's wanting you to update your music collection. I have copied many of my LP's from the 70's using a Turntable directly plugged into the USB computer. It came with editing software to make very nice copies of my LP's. I have also purchased music that was remastered. The majority of the remastered music was from Zepplin the Door's it was worth the investment in my opinion to buy the remastered CD's.
The statement you made "the younger generation surely don't like the music from the 70's" could not be any further from the truth in my experience in my case with two daughters. One just finished her last year at University of Buffalo and started her new job in Boston this last Monday. My other daughter works as a teachers aid so she can spend more time with her 6 year old and her husband. They both love the same music as me. My 23 year old daughters music is mostly been from my collection of Niel Young Crazy Horse,. All of Led Zeppelin, Buddy Guy Junior Wells, Tom Petty, Pink Floyd, Doobie Brothers, Eric Clapton,Skynyad, Steve Milker, Joplin, Stevie Ray Vaughan just scratching the surface. I also like a lot of music that they have turned me on to.
I am only 57 years old so hopefully I am in the younger generation you are referring to. .
Music is the best bond that I have with my daughter, nephews and nieces. Music is something that we all enjoy as a family either going to concerts or when we have family picnics and get together s we are always playing music and dancing.
Music is a great family bond..

Ok rde,

I truely stand corrected with the general choice of words I used to refer to generational likes & dislikes. Sorry. I actually didn't intend it to be taken that way, but it is in the context meaning of the way I said it.

Back to my point about replacement of the old collection. I won't go there to the vinyl transcriptions, as I hear the stylus & cantalever resonence of a very mechanical medium. Not to mention the scratches.

Yes, I have transcribed vinyl into computer files myself. They do have a full 24 khz audio bandwidth & the upper frequencies are not all triangle wave forms, like CD digital is. All of which is a plus for vinyl.

Reel tape is leaps & bounds better than vinyl, but you don't see many studios around still using aging machines for major productions. Tape machine have not been manufactured since around 1995. The tape is also bulky to manage. Oh, & expensive!

That leaves the present & future to digital sound capture & reproduction. That is unless something truely revolutionary is thought up in a few years that ultimately kills all previous mediums, like the digital file did to vinyl & tape, & before that, optical movie sound track & bee's wax cylinders.

Yes I do remember, as a child, listening to 78's on a windup Brunswick turntable, screw set steel stylus in a mechanical player head, with a mica diaphram, likely from circa 1920.

I have moved on to better things, like mp3's, & ocassionally a FLAC file from the web in high res 96k24b, & I really love my Sony SACD. It sounds almost as good as some of the mp3's I upsample & get lucky with a huge boost in quality.

A lot of the quality starts in the studio, done by engineers that really care what their productions end up sounding like on someone's 100 grand sound system.

For now, it looks good for the growth of digital into hi definition commercially. Right, I almost forgot Neil Young. He has started a new company selling high res music files over the internet as a download for a premium price. The file type is called Pono. I was speaking of Neil's current occupation, selling high res digital files for download, not his music arts history. I do like most, if not all, Neil Young music of the era.

Since I have been lead to believe, digital never looses anything inportant from the file when it is compressed from the studio master to the CD or mp3. I want to know what other individuals think about resampling their digital files to improve the resolution in playback.

Even more important, I want to know how you think is the best way, & best supportive software, to upsample in batch file fashion, not the old hands on one at a time file infussion. To hand do it one file at a time, has a small margin between happiness & being overworked.

Some individuals swear they can take any file, & restore it to 99% of it's original studio quality. (I personally know some people at a heat treating plant, that say they can turn a tin can into battle ship armor, you get what I mean?)

I for one place most of my attempts in the 70 to 80% restoration range, given a little guess work on my part as to what the original master sounded like in the first place.

So, anyone out there? Is it worth upsampling all of my digital music, or a waste of time? It does seem to be a lot of work for so little improvement in general, with an ocassional wow!, did that make a difference....

As for you rde, I hope I retracted any ill statements leveled towards the younger generation. My oldest is 50+, one of them is a CEO of a huge well known world wide corporation, & the youngest just graduated high school this month & is out on a camping trip presently climbing mountains. I count 8 of them, two of them live & work in the middle east, plus my wife, & we all love music.

I do my best work when I am either playing or listening to music. I am still chasing Tommy Emmanuel & Yngwie Malmsteen on the guitar, but I've been playing lead for about 50 years. For real.

Hi there TTT'dMac,

Sounds like a hell of an island to live on down under mate.

I have a friend of 20 years or more that lives in Loxton SA on the Murry river. Don't suppose you live very across the street close to Loxton? It is about 500kelo's north from Adalade?

Oh yes the tube valve amp for the new earphones?

There are so many name brands to choose from, & they are all state of the art quality. You pick, I'll watch!

I understand there are new music files you can download made just for earphone listening??? Have you tried out any of those file types yet? By all means, take a listen to one of them. They are an experience to hear. Not all download sites have them, but I think 2L, which is a recording label has them on their download site.

On the tube valve amp. After you buy the right amp for the new earphones.... Get yourself an old cheap radio shack volt ohm meter with a dB scale on it. (or buy a new analogue vom, not a digital vom) measure the voltage across the earphones L to ground & R to ground, while playing a loud music file.

Adjust the amp gain so the vom does not exceed, (go higher than) 0dB or 0.775 volt AC on the vom meter. That is about 3/4 of 1 rms ac volt. Leave the meter connected for continous volume measurement. Adjust main volume accordingly to maintain 0 dB peak levels with varying music file volume levels.

It is at this volume level of 0 dB point the earphones will perform with the highest dynamic volume range, lowest distortion, & highest quality reproduction of the music.

It should produce aprox. 90 to 92 dB's of sound, (SPL) into your ear @ the peak of 0 dB's, for the most plesent low distortion musical experience.

Cheers. (I'll have one of those bloody mugs of beer, if you please, mate)

Hi there!
I’ve been a long, long time lurker here and thought it’s time I introduce myself and offer my thanks for luring me into this awesome hobby of ours.

I found this community back many years ago when I was searching for reviews for my first set of headphones, AKG’s K172HD. Fast forward several years and thanks to this group here… I now own AKG’s K712 Pro and Schitt’s Asgard amp to drive them! While not nearly as impressive of a collection as many of yours, I’m sure this is still only the beginning…

I’ve also spent much time in the DIY area; playing around and learning much with different designs here and there. All quite interesting stuff to me!

Anyways, just wanted to say hello and thanks! I’ll see you around hopefully :)

Hi friends!

Just wanted to drop in and introduce myself.  I've been an enthusiast for years.  I have frequented Head-Fi for a long time as well, but I've never joined.  Not much of a forum poster.  Thanks to everyone on this forum for all the great advice and fun conversations.  I look forward to getting to know you!

G'day HiRSW,

Great country, great weather and even, better beer. There is a spare stool at my bar anytime
beerchug.gif
But, no,  I live 2560kms West of Loxton, but have driven through there on numerous occasions. Beautiful country around that part of the Murray.

I haven't heard about these new music files, but will have a look for them, and see what comes up. I appreciate the detailed info on these dB/volts/ohms and the likes. I do have a good Multi Metre but have never played around much with it, as anything electric is one thing I haven't really played with.
I had a Peterbilt 379 Prime Mover truck, that used to do ¼ Million Kms a year in, and I had this short in it, that would knock out my Brake lights at the most inopportune time. I was in the sparky's work shop every other day, replaying the bulbs, and looking for this damn short in the wiring.
We couldn't find it, after 3months of looking, and because I moved oversize loads, and with police escorts, for some of the Mining Equipment, I need to get this issue fixed. $14k later, a new wiring harness, (and a loss of a week ½ work ~ upwards of $35k) I vowed to never touch electrics again. It ripped my soul out of me . . . .
devil_face.gif
 I will however into a ohm meter . .

I am seriously looking at the Little Dot range, and still swayed towards the MKIII. I have asked around in the e Series thread, and made one of my own, which didn't pass muster and the Mods haven't approved it yet, but hope to get feedback on the LD-Grado combo. I have read good things.

This Tube Amp era is new to me, because I haven't had a Amp since my Marantz HiFi system, that I had while serving, and it did all the work for me. Being near 3k I would hope it would lol

I have made a txt file with these measurement sin it, so thank you for taking the time to type ´em out for me . . . Much appreciated

Cheers

Hey all,
New member here.  Long time music lover, but new to the headphone scene.  There's a lot to take in and I've just begun.  I was using a pair of V-Moda IEMs for the last 8 years and finally decided it's time to upgrade and switch styles.  I'm close to pulling the trigger on a new pair but wanted to get some feedback from some folks here first.  My price range is maximum $1000 and I don't really even want to spend that much, I'm sure you know what I mean.

I listen to a lot of genres of music but mostly electronic music, but not techno, so I don't need anything really bass prominent.  I tend to like a warm sound over a more neutral sound.  I also want headphones that do not require an external amp to drive them.  Maybe later down the road I'll explore that rabbit hole.

I went to a local shop and listened to several headphones.  The one's that really moved me were the Grado Rs2e, and the McIntosh MHP1000 (currently out of my price range).
A couple I wasn't thoroughly impressed with were the Grado Sr325e and Grado PS1000e (thought it sounded great but not $1700 great, if you know what I mean).

Some options I'm currently considering purchasing:
Grado - Rs2e, PS500e, Rs1e, or GS1000e
A used pair of Beyerdynamic T5p
Shure - 1540

So any thoughts as to the models I'm considering, recommendations, or just want to say 'what's up,' are all welcome.

Thanks for taking the time to read and look forward to chatting with you all in some of the forums.

Gday mate.

Welcome, I'm new around here too.
I recently received the Grado SR325e's and love them. I know in 20-30 hrs after burn in, they will sound so much better. Now since you don't want these, the word around here is, more like the Rs1e over the Rs2e. I can't judge, because I haven't heard them. There are Grado threads around, and they can get a little overwhelming coming in at 300+/1700+ pages of information. For what you want though, I think you will be better served buying the lesser of the 2 models.
All in all, like I said, I love the 325e and plan on getting a AMP or AMP/DAC combo to run out of my iMac, once they are burnt in, and just zone out . . .
Hope all goes well, and you get the info you need from those that have had all the models you mention.

PS: Have a read of this Post comparing ALL Grados http://www.head-fi.org/t/530965/grado-fan-club/24930#post_11625809 that I was linked too for information . .
