As defined by Apple -
Apple Lossless is CD quality: 16 bit at 44.1 kHz (kilohertz), and goes up to 24 bit at 48 kHz
Apple Hi-Res Lossless: 24 bit at 192 kHz
Apple Lossless vs. Hi-Res Lossless
I have seen the quality of the bit-rate on songs change between the 2 - sometimes it has to do with licensing, other times it could be data transmission, region, etc.
I did not see
anywhere that Apple guarantees Hi-res Lossless vs. Lossless in their delivery (in fact they state that support can vary by all of these factors) AND you might want to check the settings on the app itself as you can specify different bit-rate based on streaming vs. download - I have seen the quality settings change when the app is updated to lower bit rates simply as it reverts to the default settings, so you might check there as well...
