New: Brainwavz R3
Feb 6, 2014 at 1:47 PM Post #106 of 157
After using them for a couple of days and comparing them to my A161p, I'd say sound signature wise they aren't too different. I think the A161p has faster transients, punchier bass, and a bit more clarity than the R3. Soundstage is bigger on the R3, which also has a bit more air, but weirdly has less sparkle in the treble than the A161p. Comfort-wise I dislike how large and heavy the housing is, which irritates my outer ear after a while and making it hard to get a good seal without Comply tips. The R3 has the beefiest cable I've seen in an IEM. If my A161p (weakest aspect is the frail cable) had that I'd never feel a need to upgrade it.

Hi,

I wonder if any of you can shed some light on this topic

Thanks!

I tried to contact Raz via PM msg but he never replied.

I was unable to get a fit with my R3 review unit, I won't go into details but it was not possible for me to keep seal and the memory wire was rather hard to work with. After not receiving a reply on asking Raz what he wanted me to do I came up with an alternative to send my unit onto a reliable member (d marc0) to see if he had better luck and review them. I believe this was completed a few days ago.

d marc0's R3 Review.

Thanks to Raz and MP4Nation for the review unit, I really appreciated the opportunity though R3 wouldn't work for me so I came up with best solution I could not hearing from you for a long time.

It's rather strange to me that you and others might have fit issues with the R3, since they are really so easy (for me) to stick in my ears and bend the wire round the back. I don't even need to fiddle with the things a fraction as much as other IEMs I've had.

To be quite blunt they were a nightmare and I see no need for such long memory wire.

And it seems I'm not alone.

Poorest design I've seen - and unfortunately detracts from an IEM that otherwise sounded pretty good.

Hmm. The memory wire's only 11cm long - yeah, ok, its longer than perhaps it needs to be

You're kidding when you said that - right?  For a start the formable wire on the sample I was sent was 16cm (see review - http://www.head-fi.org/products/brainwavz-r3-dual-dynamic-driver-earphones/reviews/10143), not 11 cm.  I'm assuming H20's was the same.  Compare that with the wire on my SE535 - only 8.5 cm (a perfect length).

Anyway - if you read my review - you'll understand how much trouble some of us had.

If they fixed the cable - they'd have a mighty nice IEM on their hands.

Hmm. The memory wire's only 11cm long - yeah, ok, its longer than perhaps it needs to be, but the strain relief that Brainwavz use to join it to the cable is pretty solid and chunky, so if you shortened it, that strain relief would be nearer to the back of your ear and would no doubt piss some people off. You can't please everyone all the time. Look, as far as I'm concerned it's a storm in a teacup, and hardly a big deal.

Why did you think they were a 'nightmare'? Really? How? I'm intrigued. I guess I must have a freakish head or something.

You're quite curious aren't you for a member who freshly joined today hanging out in the many Brainwavs associated threads.

If you had of read the link I provided you - you would see examples of what my problem is with R3. The thick memory is so long it touches my shoulders and dislodge the housing when ever I move. To add to drama the housing nozzle made in such a shape won't angle correctly to 7-10 peoples canals or seal properly.  I think most know very well there was no need for such long memory wire  and there's no need to defend the obvious. They wouldn't seal to my ear, I tried every tip alternative I had (and believe me I have a few). They ended up scratching both my ears and I was in fits of rage trying to make them stay sealed, in the end I gave up. this is coming from someone who can fit TF10 in 5 seconds. They need to lose the memory wire length by at least half then we can possibly deal with the housing angles. It's simply a poor design that wasn't thought through properly.

Here is my quote you missed from the link I provided.

Exactly what happened to me. Half the reason I sent my unit to d marc0 hoping he'd have better luck. They almost did my head in, I see no need for such long cumbersome memory wire. The housing is already a rather unique design that may exhibit problems, then to add two dangling dread lock memory wires on the end iced the cake for me. It's a shame because when they did seal they sounded rather nice. The aluminum housing gives them a nice timbre or essence to the sound.

And the others in which I linked you to.

Well done - I can't even fit R3 to my ear, the memory wire is so fricken long that either hurts my ear, and keep hitting my shoulder and dislodge the IEM from my ear, no matter what I try, I can never fit them in

+1. I had the same problem.

From the feedback around here, I think it's close to about 7 out of 10 people have the problem

Try measuring from the bottom of the strain relief.  That piece is rigid too.

Have a look at the pics in my review.

Poor design - as simple as that really.  Pity.

They must have shortened it - still far too long - not only for me, but many others also.  And if you look around, there are a lot of complaints / comments about the length of the formable wire.  Whether you like it or not - it is a poor design.  Compare it to average length of other formable wires out there and you'll see why.

Glad you like and can use them.  I can't  - not with that wire.

I'm waiting for Raz to come up with version 2 - approx 8-9cm.  Then he'll have a potential winner on his hands.

Any word on him from this? I'm getting a technical mate of mine to halve the length of the wire, looking foward to that (he's not the quickest with stuff though). FWIW, I find the wire moderately annoying, but the housings comfortable and no problem seal-wise. The Audio-Technica IM50 have much better wire, but I find them less comfortable because of the housings themselves. Not long like these, but bulkier.

BTW, some reviewers who don't find the design so terrible:

And dmarc0 too, after a bit of fiddling.

I don't think we're blind to the fact some people can get a fit with R3, I think Monstermunch has already more than proven that point to us, and yourself Qauterzone have shown us that wonderful picture you provided using a work around with the memory wire to make them work just as Ozstewart does.  The problem is it's not a user friendly design in the first place to the majority I'm reading and I'm going to be honest about that calling it how it played out for me. If it's not known that members are having problems Branwavs will ignore the issue, and maybe even possibly next time decide to make the memory wire long enough to dry our clothes off. Going from the pictures provided it seems Brainwavs may of already shortened the memory wire as I do believe Brooko's measurements were accurate on his unit, they much resemble what I experienced.

I really only came into this thread to give Raz the link hoping the reviewer I handed them to could give R3 better justice because the sound is nice. I wasn't going to say anything about the memory wire more than I have in d marc0;'s thread but I will say things how they are, and always give an honest opinion.  I have no need to try and protect a thread for future sale or review samples (which is very common) Easy come easy go for me. And with that said I'm done here, I've said my piece.

Here's a photo of me with the R3 in my lughole - the strain relief just about comes to the level of my lobe, which seems perfect to me.

i completely understand why some people cant get a good fit but I'm one of them that dont mine the cable at all.  they're comfortable to me.  That being said; it would have been a smarter choice to have the memory wire shorter to accommodate a wider audience.

They're the best dual dynamic I've heard so far.

I see that your ear is little big and so the big (full ear) memory fits perfectly.looks like bwavz designed the same way to glide thru out the back of the ear and ends wiyh the lobe. For most its bit lenghthy so they found the fix by folding to desired size. Btw do you use the large ear tips?
Nice picture showing how comfy ur with unaltered memory.
