Yep, the wrong is the insidiousness of the dB/V unit, which is not apt for comparisons of real life efficiency.

In our case, the HD650 achieves (the same) 103 dB/V notwithstanding a much higher impedance than the K501. To put it differently -- when applying 1V to the HD650's drivers, less power in mW's is drawn from the amp.

One more thing: starting from Sennheiser's specs, I've found out a real-life efficiency of about 97.8 dB/mW for the HD650 and of 99.9 dB/mW for the HD595. No bad

So, comparing headphones from different manufactorers might not be as simple as we would love to think. Also, with the different ways of representing efficiency/sensitivity, i doubt whether the measurement of K501 is consistent with those of K601/701. Maybe somebody could just ask AKG : )

Heh.

Well, what can we do about it else than playing with calculators

The calculations are very interesting!

But there is more to questions about whether headphones are easy/hard to drive than how much sound pressure is produced. On this forum people often say that headphones which can produce a lot of sound pressure from a tiny amp, need a high quality amp to sound their best.

We'll see. As for me, I don't expect too much - at least from the K701.

Why is that?

In my opinion they have already done it anyways with both the K340's and the K1000's.

Even a K501 with bass would be a serious contender to the HD 650. So my expectations are not too modest. Although it's possible that they will be disappointed.

I just don't know. The model number
tongue.gif
, the looks, the specifications (*) ... they don't seem to really challenge Sennheiser's very fine all round achievement with the HD650. The only one account so far of the K701's sound seems to support my forecast. Obviously don't take my reasoning very seriously

(*) I also calculated the maximum spl the K701 is (would) be capable of according to the official specifications. 116 dB at 200 mW (the maximum power it handles), whereas the HD650 (partly thanks to its 500 mW power handling) goes as high as 124-125 dB and the HD595 almost touches 127 dB. Which would suggest me some (if small) restriction of disposable dynamic range with the new AKG's, following on the K501 line (for the record, I got a 117 dB max output for the K501).

Has anyone heard the 601/701's yet?
Bobby b. You were going to the ifa, have you found/heard them there?
I'm so curious...
Want to get some new cans in the near future and am wondering if the akg's are worth considering.

Yep, this is the IFA thread I made:
http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=135573
Just read about the AKGs there on the first page, don't take it too serious though, only had a few minutes to listen to them and the music was also new to me ..

And yes, I would really like to see a "AKG K 601 vs DT 880 vs HD 650" thread

I've ordered the 701 last week by my local dealer and I'll test it seriously after burn in about 100 hours. Sadly I have'nt a clear information about delivery. Hope that I can hold it in my Hands in one or two weeks. The price was 340,-€, nearly the same like HD650 in the first 6 Months. So I think it must to be AKG K701 vs HD650 and perhaps vs DT880 with some replacing pads or some other SE features like a better design.

Wirst garantiert mit denen einige Stunden Spaß haben

. 340€? That's not too much, considering that the actual retail price is 400€. Don't expect to get them this month though, I read in a thread that they won't be released until the end of october.
