I've already made that comparison, so yes it does has a similar signature. I would never say much better treble though...ymmv.

The start of the show for the 400s is the mids. Just great planar mids. This is an impressive headphone as soon as you get over the fact that it's not the improved 400 original. For the record, the original 400 was not a bass head can. The bass was very much audiophile quality and the closest bass I've ever heard to the lcd-2 pre fazor...incredible extension, texture and speed.

This.  And when EQ'd and fed direct out of speaker taps on a vintage monster amp.............the bass is HE-6 quantity/almost quality.  I love my HE-400's and don't miss the HE-6............if you can believe that.

What EQ settings are you using?

Hey Matt,

How's the bass of the HE-400S versus the LCD-2 Fazor ?

Thanks

Thanks for the impressions!!

Does anyone have an HD650 to direct compare the two... A/B?

How does the bass clarity compare?
Can the 400S layer and spread out an image better than the HD650?

Treble resolution & clarity seems to be better on the 400S... is there anything else it does better / different?
Generally, would the 400S be more of a side-grade or an up-grade to the 650?

thanks

X2.  I hope that the 400S are not just a side-grade versus the HD650.

The 400S is a $300 hp, but everyone seems to be comparing them to significantly more expensive sets, e.g., HD650, LCD-2, HE-560, HE-400i. Why are these expected to perform up to or better than these more expensive sets?

I'm new to these forums and the audiophile scene, but I've been following this thread and decided to order these a few days ago as my first pair of audiophile quality headphones.  From what I've been reading, I think I will be getting exactly what I hoped for, a nice pair of headphones for a rather inexpensive price.

The 650 used to be in that price range but they just recently got more expensive again.

It's possible to buy a brand new pair of HD650 for $275/$300 these days.

It's crazy because the HD650 are still THE benchmark and one of the best headphones on the market even if the first revision was released in 2003.

Ah, that's very interesting.  Well, in that case, I suppose I would also like to hear someone's comparison of the 400S and the HD650.

I have been going back and forth between the 400s and hd650 for a few days now. The 400s competes well but ultimately the hd650 comes out on top for me. The mids, while good on the 400s, are better on the 650. And also the sound is a little more cohesive on the 650.

The 400s has more sub bass than the 650 which has more of a mid bass bump. The sound at this price is impressive on this hp especially at $299. This is a good planar that is comfortable and will bring the planar sound to a wholel new sub set of potential owners. But IMHO, it does not knock off the hd6x0.

Just received my 400s from the DHL man. I will post some impressions later tonight. I was listening to the 400i just before he came.
1. The 400s plays at a higher volume compared to the 400i at the same volume setting from an Asgard 2. no doubt about it. more efficient.
2. They sound close to each other as I was expecting. Sound stage might be bigger on the 400s. I need more time with them. Will give more thoughts in a day or so.
3. They sound real good though. WoW
