I currently have the Shure SRH-840. I also have the Beyer Dynamic DT-990 600 ohms. I prefer the 840s over the 990s. I LOVE the sound from the 840s. Highs are not shrillingly high, and the mids are not recessed. I LOVE the bass from the 840s. The only down side is that they are a little heavy and they are closed so my ears sweat a lot.

I want a pair of open cans that have the same or similar bass, mids, and highs as the 840s. The 990s are shrilling at times and the mids are recessed. Thanks!

You can go Grado

The pads might not be up to spec with your style of "comfort", but you ask around the sr60 thread for any pads that might just slip on the cans.

I just made custom pads for my Grados and the sound and comfort changed like night and day. I did a doughnut style pad around the driver with some pleather and high density foam. Too bad it's too hard and I need to make some newer/softer ones. It wasn't the foam, it was compressing the foam by sewing it too tightly that made them hard. So more foam and less tight on the material.

I want to try the Grado SR325is. Will these cans meet my requirements that I posted in the OP? I have the dt990 600 ohms on sale here on head fi. If anyone wants to trade, I'm down.

The highs on the SR325i may be too harsh (I think it is considered the most shrill Grado). There is the Alessandro product line if you are after a more neutral Grado (Alessandro MS-2 is the equivalent of the SR325i). Another two possibilities to consider are Senn HD598 (or HD600/HD650 is you have a decent enough amp) and Audio-Technica ATH-AD900. I think you will struggle to find the bass response of the SRH840 on an open headphone, though.

I would recommend the HD650/600, like what clownzor said, you do need a decent amp for unleashing its maximum potential.

My friend just got the HD650 with Essence STX, they sound magnificent; out of the box (like 2 hours in use), ample bass; mids are not too forward, clear enough; the highs are borderline recessed (in a good way), as well as the upper mids. Comfort wise, the grip has quite a lot of clamp force on my big head, but I think over time it will mold to the shape of your head. The connector cords are quite long, longer than any Grados, you won't really need to look for extension cables. The build quality is so fine, pictures don't do it justice; the HD650 is built like a brick, a thermoplastic carbon fibre brick (I read somewhere that it's made out of this lol).

The MS2i when burnt in for quite a bit, is very laid back than the 325i. 325i is too shrill for me. Grado's comfort is acquired taste, you either like it or you don't, just like it's sound signature. I LOVE my ms2i by the way, I just can't sell them to fund me an HD650, because I need both.

Dangg...the 650 are $500! How much better are the 650 compared to the 600? I see that they both have an impedance of 300 ohms. That is half as much as the 600 ohms dt990 I have right now. I use the Apogee One to amp them. Maybe someone wants to trade their hd600 for my dt990 600 ohms? They are pretty much the same price.

I don't really consider the 650 better than the 600. Both are great but it really is a matter of taste since they both have different sound signatures.

Which one is more like the Shure SRH-840? I want the sound signature (or as close to it as possible) of the 840. I know that you can't find the same bass on open cans, but as close to the 840 is what I'm looking for.

What is the difference between the dt990 32 ohms vs dt990 250 ohms vs dt990 600 ohms? I have the 600 ohms version and I am wondering if I really need that high of an impedance.

I just listened to my dt990 600 ohms and I don't like the recessed mids. I love vocals.

I ended up going with the HD650s! They are the most comfortable cans I have ever put on my cranium. I can actually listen to these for hours without fatigue, unlike the DT990s. The highs are high enough for me, the mids are AMAZING, and the lows are VERY tight and powerful for open cans. I saw these worn by a CIA agent that was wire tapping in one of those detective shows! Talk about PROfessional!

If I can compare these HD650s to a food item, it would be caramel. It is so smoooth, rich, and flows down really slowly. I listen to a lot of relaxing music, so these suit my personality really well. Maybe one day when I have some hearing loss, I can enjoy the DT990s. Easy fellas....I want no flame war here. Just expressing my opinion!!!
