A short ersion of the review i was in the process of writing is now in the Summer Gift Guide:

'
If anything their imaging is closest to that of the Stax SR009s, with very precise imaging that represents the music well.'

'This is awesome I can only recall experiencing with the best of the best when it comes to vocals — Stax’s SR009s and SR4070s and Sony’s MDR-R10s.'

Later this year we're planning to do a Stax vs. HE1000 and Ether shoot-out in Tokyo. Since there will be at least a couple of high-end 'stat amps there I may have to eat my words!

The fact that you can talk about ETHER and SR009 in the same sentence with regards to imaging and vocals has me hopeful that this is the open HP I have been waiting for...

I have limited experience with Stax, but a (small, meet conditions) bit of time with 007,009 and a couple of others. The Ethers had me thinking Stax also. So did the HE1000. The Ethers sure impressed me.

I've done a Stax, he1000 and Ether shootout. Just need to take the notes and put those thoughts into a well written review.

Does the AKG TOTL not meet muster? Is the price too high for what it offers?

I only ask as its price is in the same range as the HD800 and Ether. But do a search on HD800 and K812 in this thread and you see what is like an order of magnitude difference or more in how many more times the HD800 was compared to the Ether.

Asking as someone who never heard the K812 and knows little about it.

The K812 isn't as popular around here. I thought it was pretty solid from my audition, but they don't get any love at head-fi. most people here think the hd800 are superior.

Dont know about the US, but down here they were severely overpriced, which didn't help.

Tyll has some issues with the K812, FWIW. You can check Innerfidelity for his review.
wow ... bright! Based solely on the frequency response measurements. Thanx.

P.s. Ether can't get here soon enough. Dan, I'll take a box with the funky lithography if there are any delays beyond this week so I can get it sooner. :) ... wouldn't that be a kick in the arse if the 1st shippmeet stops just one before mine. -lol.

Yeah, I don't really care about the printing on the box. I just want my cans!
