MrSpeakers ETHER Flow and ETHER C Flow -- Inspired by Electrostatic Headphones
Jul 31, 2016 at 1:13 AM Post #661 of 5,796
Just wanted to drop a note that Dan has tweaked the Ether C Flow since he sent me the review unit.  I got ahold of the final-for-sure-definitely-production-this-time unit today and it's a noticeable change from the one I heard before.  Notably more bass without being "bassy" like a TH-900 or something.

People will not be calling the Ether C Flow "bass light" like the Ether C.  Yummy!

(Review coming soon over on Audio-Head!)

Oh and here's a pic people have been asking for:

k maybe its the lighting but **** those new cups look good

You can do a lot with lighting...

But I agree, the new pattern looks really nice.

Old pattern, great lighting...

Well we all know what the old one looks like already.  :p ...

I actually dont. Is old on the left or right?

I think from comparing to other pix it's on the right. Is that correct?

Thanx.

No worries.  New one is left (square pattern) and old one is right (zig-zag pattern).  I know the old one looks terrible in that pic but I didn't worry about it because there's a lot of Ether C porn around already.

with all the bass and midrange meat, it still has the sparkle and presence of the original C?

The tonal balance has shifted so the headphone isn't as treble-forward as it used to be.  I think the quality of the treble is actually a little better than before, smoother and faster, but it's not as in-your-face as it was.

  Hi!

As promised, here's the information on the upgrade program.

We have worked very hard to ensure upgrade pricing is as low as possible.  Even the "basic" upgrade replaces the entire driver module and matching driver assemblies, which is particularly difficult with upgrades.  As such we will commit to this pricing for the first 40 upgrades at which point we'll assess costs and if needed we will adjust pricing.

An order form will be live on MrSpeakers.com late next week.  We anticipate starting upgrades in mid September.  The order form will not require payment, it will secure your place in line.  When we are ready to start upgrades we'll send a link to a private page that allows you to place your order.  You'll have two weeks from receipt of notification to place your order or you forfeit your place in the queue.

We normally make special pricing for owners who purchased 30 days prior to an announcement but we are making an exception and extending special pricing for new headphone orders made up to 60 days prior to the Flow announcement.  Headphones purchased AFTER the Flow announcement can be upgraded using normal pricing.  Special pricing does not apply to used headphones purchased within this time frame, and proof of purchase is required if you did not purchase from MrSpeakers.com.

Note: upgrades replace the entire driver assembly so the headphone will require burn-in just like a new headphone would.

Pricing:

Basic upgrade:  $349.99 + shipping
  1. Replace both drivers with new matched drivers**
  2. Add “FLOW” slider to headband
  3. Certificate of authenticity and SN registry entry

Full upgrade*:  $499.99 + shipping
  1. Replace both drivers**
  2. Add “FLOW” slider to headband
  3. Certificate of authenticity and SN registry entry
  4. Replace ear pads
  5. Replace ear cups or grills
  6. Convert open to closed and vice-versa (optional)
  7. Flow box

Special pricing for recent purchasers:

Basic upgrade if purchased between May 17, 2016 and July 15, 2016: $199.99 + shipping
Full upgrade if purchased between May 17, 2016 and July 15, 2016: $349.99 + shipping

Special pricing does not apply to units purchased after the announcement (due to price decrease of ETHER models) or to used headphones purchased in this time frame.  Proof of purchase is required to receive the special discount for headphones not purchased through the MrSpeakers website.

*Original Open ETHER headphones use silver bolts on the headband assembly, while ETHER C and both flow models use bronze-tinted bolts.  The bolts are not replaced for ETHER headphones, other than that upgraded headphones will be identical to new Flow headphones.

**In order to precision match drivers we will need to remove and replace one of the baffles.  If your headphone has visible damage to the metal baffle we will notify you and offer the option to replace the damaged part for additional expense.

First of all Thanks for making the upgrade possible despite all costs and industrial procedure headaches...
For those not living in North America, shipping & custom costs may be heavy. Anyhow, it is impossible to make everybody happy....

For those applying for the upgrade is there a chance to recover the 'old' drivers? Sorry I know I am a dreamer....
If not, may we know what will be the 'old' drivers future?
Rgds.

does the c flow now has more bass than the open one?
I'm still not sure if I want the open or closed one this time around, I do need some outside noise reduction, but still think open back sound is superior than closed back for me but not as practical.
as you know I listen to metal mostly ^_^, the fact that the treble is not in your face anymore is really nice.

It's is a great opportunity to swap from an Ether to Ether C but mines Staying De carbonated... Dan taking C02 out of the atmosphere.. is a great thing for the environment ..My Gas is pure Ether... Despite what the wife accuses me of..

Anyone who wants to send their Ether to the US for upgrading and is worried about customs taxes, a recent trade agreement between the US and a bunch of other countries (incl. EU states, Australia, ...) has abolished customs duty for electronic goods, which includes headphones. The agreement will be implemented in stages, the first one having gone into effect on 1st July. I'm still trying to find out whether headphones are part of stage one, anyway it might differ depending on your country.

Just wondering, why was this thread started in the regular headphones forum and not Summit-fi? Is it about accessibility? I don't mind this at all but if the HD800 is in Summit-fi what makes the Ether Flows less "summity" when they both cost more and may even sound better?

I know the headphones forums gets more views so maybe it's about reaching out to people.. Not just people with big wallets. Totally understand that move if that is the case. I just don't want to feel like Dan's efforts were being trivialized and that this was his conscious decision to release the news here and not Jude's sole decision.
