MrSpeakers Alpha PRIME: Impressions and Discussion Thread
Nov 8, 2014 at 11:52 AM Post #168 of 2,891
Waiting for fellow forumers who have upgraded to provide feedback to learn more. I am in asia and the local distributor still has not decided if it would handle this upgrade availability. :frowning2:

Hopefully in a little over two weeks I can comment.  My Dogs are shipped.  Now the waiting really begins!

Likewise just shipped mine. Should be in MrSpeakers hands on Monday. Maybe, I might get lucky and get my pair by next Saturday (NYC area Fall meet). I packed them in their original box sans the stand, cable, and bag. However, I left the pads on. Were we supposed to not ship them with the pads?

I'll most likely have impressions from Saturday's meet.

I received my AP yesterday. I believe in burn in so I left them burning over night with my Vanquish cable so these are preliminary impressions.

First, I like the new comfort headband in this AP better. The rest of the headphones are first class just like the AD.

I  played with them all morning. During the first listening I noticed a wider soundstage than the AD, more detail, a sharper and more defined highs and tighter bass BUT I noticed (to my taste) a hump in the upper midrange and lower highs that was fatiguing me. I removed the ear pads and noticed no dots on the drivers. I placed first 1 dot at the center of each driver and listened again. The improvement was little so I removed the pads again and place a second dot at the front corner (as Dan recommended). They improved a little more but still kind of bright to my taste.

I had on hand a tuning kit that I ordered when I had the ADs so I took couple of felt disks (even that is said they are not used for the AP) and place one in each cup. Now the improvement was noticeable but the sound went just a tad too dark in some recordings. After that I decided to remove the pads to realigned the two dots on each driver with the same configuration used on the AD which was the tow dots butting together across the middle of the driver.

That did the trick and magic started happening. The sound now was perfect. Similar signature of the my old ADs but with bigger soundstage, more definition and tighter bass.

More to come later after some more time with them.

Could you post a picture that shows where you placed the dots?
Maybe other people can use the tune too?

Mine are in preparation Dan said. Soooo looking forward to hearing them.

It sounds like that you are used to the tuning of the AD since you ended up with the same configuration on the AP. That is great! The mind has the ability to retune slight differences in the frequency response of any headphone given enough time to adapt and it will appear to sound flat. After all our outer ears which is like a sound collector and would have a slight difference in frequency response before the sound goes to the ear canal and to the ear drum. Each outer ear shape is a bit different on each individual and therefore the frequency response is a bit different by the time the sound reaches the ear drum. Some manufacters used angled drivers to give a chance of the outer ear to modify the sound more. Still each of my headphones sounds very different from each other.

What is nice about MrSpeakers that he offers a tuning kit for the headphones and extra tuning dots came with my Prime if I decided to use them. How many headphone manufactures offer that? Some headphones offer a adjustable bass port but with the MrSpeaker tuning kit you have some control with the treble as well.

With my Alpha's I am in the process of trying another amp that may have better synergy with it before and if I decided to use the tuning dots. The main reason I brought my Prime was for the lower distortion and better sound stage and the tuning kit will not change that.

I am very much interested in acquiring a pair of Mr. Speakers Alpha Prime headphones to complement my open, Audeze "classic"  LCD-2.2's...and am very intrigued by the ability to tune the Apha Primes...

As I understand it, the Alpha Primes are based on the Alpha Dogs, but modified...So...

1. Can one tune the Alpha Primes with the adjustable bass port screw as one could with the Alpha Dogs?
2. Are there any frequency graphs regarding the effect on frequency output with one or two dots installed on a given headphone driver?  In addition, are there any frequency graphs regarding the installation of the tuning discs/pads...?...and/or in addition to the tuning dots?

I realize that numbers/graphs can only indicate so much, and everyone's hearing is unique, however, I would like to see the effects if possible, in order to guide me, as well as understand that which I prefer...

On mine the slot for the bass port screw normally located is sealed with white sealant and does not appear to be user adjustable for the Prime. Not going to mess with it.

So you are using the outer ear more to collect and contour  the sound and less sound directly into the ear canal. Headphone with angled driver attempts to do the same.
