More Fiio X3 64GB MicroSD Issues!

It "seems" to finish updating. I say "seems" because I have the screen to time-out after 10 seconds and I'm not really looking at it. It takes a bit of time indeed because when I press any button, the "Updating Library" animation is still running, but I then leave it be. After it finishes, it goes back to the main menu once done but when I go to the "Play all" I only see the internal memory Chesky song and three other songs from my microSD.
 
I'll try to follow that at home, change the time-out of the screen to "On" (so I can see what's going on) and report back.

So, this is what I did:
 
1) Re-organized my folders so that there wouldn't be too many in just one level
2) Modified some folder names and file names to be shorter (but not all of them!)
3) Deleted the FiiO X3 Database as per directions on the link provided
4) Re-inserted microSD card, turned backlight ON and Updated the library manually.
 
Results... Still doesn't detect anything it seems... The only thing that appears in the library now is the Chesky album but NOTHING from the microSD card (last time 3 or 4 songs from the microSD appeared on the list). I can only play via the "Browser"...
 
Question, what would impede the library from being created?
Would it be:
 
- Length of file names
- Special or specific characters
- Extra files other than music files (i.e. txt, .dat, pdfs, etc.)
- Number of files in the card (currently 12,000+ files total)
- anything else?!?
 
I love the sound quality of the player, it feels solid and well constructed, worked well with the few songs I had in its internal memory but if it wont work with my current library of songs the way I want to (i.e. being able to Shuffle through EVERYTHING without the need to manually enter folders to play songs) then it's basically useless to me... (my CHEAP Cowon C2 does this easily, no problem identifying THE SAME microSD card...). This is why I wholeheartedly agreed with:

At least the X3 is "only" $200 and not $1000...

I have 8,000 and I have to reset the X3 if I try and index them all at once. I got it to work by adding a few hundred at a time and updating after each tranche.

I will try just a few folders, and update and keep going from there.
 
Still, this is something that should be part of the player's documentation, web pages, FAQs, etc. I don't THINK I've seen a number like that anywhere. I know Cowon lists their limits for on-board and expansion cards in their documentation...

I don't think it is a hard limit - I suspect memory exhaustion which will depend on too many factors to come up with a definitive number. Also, since I got it so work by doing it a bit at a time, it should be possible to fix in the firmware by "committing" the changes to the db more frequently which will remove the limit. Hopefully (if that is a potential fix) that will be coming in a firmware update sometime soon.

Just to confirm, this firmware update that is coming, will enable the x3 to format SD cards independently?.
 
I am having some frustrating times trying to get a sandisk class10 64gb to work, so it would be a welcome upgrade if it was just a case of inserting the sd card and the x3 formatted.
 
If this is infact what is goin to happen then when would the firmware be available??

yes, the new firmware already upload to our server. please have a look at http://fiio.com.cn/support/download.aspx , and the official news and introduction will be ready after 10 hours when we back to work again.

So... Tried this and it ACTUALLY WORKS A BIT...
It recognized like 3000 songs from the 5000 I copied...
Maybe I need more time to do it Folder by Folder LOL!
THIS SUCKS and takes time out of my busy schedule but at least it's a work-around that seems to at least work a bit. I don't find it straight forward though and ANY NEW CUSTOMER that has a lot of songs and just wants to "Plug and Play" will definitely have problems. Maybe FiiO didn't take into account the number of files people have on their SD cards...
 
Oh well... I'll keep trying some other time... (If I don't sell the player first...)

This is capable of playing 24/192 lossless. It is aimed at the audiophile rather than people who want to stuff their whole collection on to one card at a low and lossless resolution

Not a valid argument, sounds like an excuse to me.
 
I'm a developer and trust me there are many ways to solve this.
 
I feel this is a problem that should be priority for the next firmware since it cripples the whole experience.

Definitely, but there are many people who doesn't want an ipod and want better sound quality.
The problem is that when basic features and usability are poor then is hard to appreciate the wonders of a product.

OK, but don't expect to play thousands of mp3 files on a player designed for hires flac

It's a PORTABLE MEDIA PLAYER, it plays just about any format there is no matter the resolution. If they only wanted to create a player to play 24/192 they would have made another "TERA" player... So... no!

It is not "designed" to just play FLACs...
It's designed to play MP3s, FLACs, APEs, ALACs, WMAs and WAVs... so again, your argument is totally invalid.

I wish I would have read all these threads before exchanging my 3rd X3. This unit has a lot going for it mostly the great sound....However, all these problems with file management make the X3 a piece of junk.
 
Audiophiles like myself generally have a lot of music and go through a lot of effort to rip it (FLAC for Me) and organize it so they can find it.
 
If what I am reading here is correct, the issue seems to be that at present there seems to be a limited amount of folders that will be recognized by the external memory. My music folders are organized by genre, artist, album & actual music files. To me this seems to be simple and logical when you have over 2000 CDs ripped. Changing all this around would be very time consuming and really screw things up for my home music server.
 
It seems like the FIIO folks are aware of this issue but my god I hate being a beta tester without my prior knowledge.
 
I read quite a few X3 reviews by so called high paid professionals before I purchased and not one mentioned what I believe is a serious issue.
 
I should be receiving the 3rd unit (Thanks to Amazon's generous return policy) today and will install the latest firmware, try and load some of my music without reorganizing, jumping through technical hoops or trying elaborate fixes. All I really want to do is load up some 64GB cards and be off listening to some great quality music.
 
If this unit doesn't work right I'll just go back to using my $31 Sanza Clip player .... that may not sound as great .... but at least works as advertised...

I found myself in the same situation, but I haven't bought the X3 yet, I have my credit card ready but this issues are a deal breaking for me.
