Monolith M1570 Over Ear Open Back Balanced Planar Headphones

Update from my side:

Didn’t get my initial ordered Sundara/Hybdrid Headband, but got refunded.
Through contacting Hifiman I could order it from them (shipped within EU) and received it today.

I also filed the mounting holes of the headband bigger to fit the pins of the original headband like other users did.

I really like the suspended headband and the headphones sit more securely overall due to the higher clamping force.
Even with the higher priced Hybrid headband I can recommend that mod aswell.

Been looking at the M1570 (closed) and was wondering if the Qudelix 5k could drive these to good volumes or even loud if possible.
You would at least need to run it balanced. Monoprice recommends at least 200mW, and the Qudelix's balanced output is good for 240mW. So according to the spec sheet, you're there, but only just.

I haven't heard the combo myself, when I owned an M1570, I was always feeding it around 6W. But I've never heard anyone say this was a particularly hard-to-drive headphone.

Jesus, 6 watts? Out of curiosity did it make any difference feeding it the power it would normally need compared to say 1-6 watts?

looks pretty easy to drive
Seems to be, yeah.
Even my Douk P1 tube amp with a rating of 160mW @32Ohm already drives them good.
For the volume 9-10 o‘clock is enough.

Oh yeah, 6W was definitely not out of necessity. That's just what the amps I daily-drive happen to output. I never got around to trying them on anything else, mostly because I didn't have a lot else back then.

I suspect the Qudelix's balanced output might be slightly underpowered, because its 240mW is right near the bottom of Monoprice's recommended 200mW-4W range. But there's a good chance it'll be fine. If not, these certainly don't need a monster amp or anything. Something like the Schiit Magni puts out over 1W for just over $100 and I'm pretty confident that would be totally adequate.

I often use my M1570s connected via 2,5mm balanced on my iBasso DX220 DAP (non-Max) - i only need like 85-90 out of 150 steps concerning volume setting. Non-balanced, it's about 110 / 150. Both high hain. Unfortunately i don't know, how much mW that is :frowning2:

with A/B testing my xDuoo TA-30 sounds a bit more airy vs my Douk P1, up to 3W vs up to 160mW, but that also could come from the obviously different tubes.
ATM I use the Mullard CV4102 in the P1 and Silvanya 5931 and Psvane 12AU7-S in the TA-30.

Personally I can´t say ther is power missing with my P1 and M1570 or even my Sundaras, but maybe my ears are just bad at analyzing xD

Edit: ok, a bit worse low end with P1 + Sundara, but thats all I hear in terms of low power.

Need help disassembling my M1570, I can't remove the yolk pin. The guide on page 18 says to use a 0.9mm hex head but there's no socket on the pin and I can't just yank it out.

They’re just glued in with some universal glue or similar, the yolks have no threads. I removed mine with needle nose pliers.

Any suggestions to get rid of the glue? These are some stubborn pins

So a little big of rage later, and I got the pins out!

Bad news is the hifiman extreme comfort headband has too small yokes...

Anyone got any idea on some ideal headband replacements?

So... I broke some of the wires inside the speaker units and ended up soldering on some new ones. While I was at it, I cleaned up the solder joints on the units since they were quite large. Put it all together and now it sounds better? It's like the sound stage opened up and now I can pick out instruments easier.

Either this is a placebo or I accidentally made these headphones better...
