wasn't impressed with MX4

sounded really laidback

hope my LCD X isn't like that

I've heard both headphones before and again yesterday and their really isnt a huge gulf seperating them sonically, I don't think you will find the X much more aggressive in sound. The quote below is somewhat extendable to the MX4/X comparison

Apart from one being easier to drive? :smile_phones:

I liked/still like a lot of disco, just on its own merits. Sure it's a confining and artificial musical approach in some ways. But you had a lot of heavyweight R&B players using it, and when music is good, it's just good, regardless of form.

What I hated/still hate about disco is that it metastaticized & overtook nearly the entire popular music for a number of years, effectively starving out all manner of jazz geniuses, singer/songwriters, and instrumentalists of all kinds. Some were just gone, never to return; others weathered the storm and managed to keep careers going. That whole one-genre-replaces-others thing sucked majorly.
It was the absolute worst time in history for music when disco was introduced. It is club music and nothing more. Everything sounds the same and it’s all about the same beat over and over to dance to. That’s great if you were a “clubber” but for just pure listening enjoyment, musicianship, technique, etc., personally hot needles piercing my eyes is a better option

What cable are you using? The sound really changes dramatically with a cable change with these headphones. Try a silver cable or a silver hybrid.

My own Empys do indeed love silver...and if one can manage it, go for the OCC kind - excellent clarity, resolution and micro detail (not just in my own HO!). And especially if the rest of the system is on the bright side...

I was fortunate enough to borrow a pair of Empyreans. I really liked them, but only with the fabric pads. I now have to decide whether to go for them or 4Z. Really tough as I loved bits of both of them. I guess the pads leant the Empys towards my preferred sound sig.

Perhaps cost and comfort could be the deciding factors then? Not forgetting the Empys are also a real work of art lol!

I actually find the 4Z very comfortable. Trying to ignore the cost of both :D

My GF says I looked like a Dr Who Cyberman when wearing the Empys!

Aha BlueThunder...they certainly do have a unique look! :)

ps. Wiped the cost from my memory long since...aided by the fact that these headphones just keep sounding better by the day, the more different pieces of music they are exposed to/trained with.
pps. And any cost difference can go towards a really nice cable :smile_phones:...

I agree with this.
The Utopia (or perhaps Stellia) is still the best, imo, if you care about how you look when you wear them. That stiff headband is not really comfortable, but looks better anyway if you plan to use them on the go.

Personally I prefer not looking at myself when I wear headphones. It makes me self conscious.

Seriously, unless they're portable, like I'm going to go outside with them, I honestly don't care all that much.

It's a bonus for sure when they look good, & even better when they look good on your head.

I find Empyrean the former but alas, not the latter.

I still like the sound a helluva lot though.

I personally find the Empys very comfortable indeed...and I haven't got much cushioning on top lol...(practically nil, in fact!).

And yeah, at the end of the day let's face it, it's the sound that counts...:)...
