Maverick Audio TubeMagic D2 (Dedicated DAC) - Review, FAQ & Info Thread

I run a Little Dot MKIII from the SS output and a JDS Labs O2 from the tube out but never at the same time. They both are always connected and sometimes I will have them both on but switch back and forth between. You might want to ask David about using both at the same time.

I have not measured with a sound meter, but the two outputs sound very similar in sound volume to me.  I have both running into my preamp and I can A/B switch them quickly.

I thought the SS output might be a smidge louder than the tube but I have no way of measuring it. I seem to like the SS output more but they are so similar it's a tough one. If you can a\b them quickly I would believe you that the outputs are the same in  volume. How do feel about the differences in the sound itself? I did get the "upgraded" tube.

This DAC seems to be quite similar to my Minimax Plus: opamps and tube output, inputs ... even the looks are similar. Did anyone compare those two?
And btw I had very good exp with the Minimax and LME and Sparkos opamps (details in the mmax plus thread). Could be that those will also fit well into the D2.

Has anyone paired the D2 with audioengine A5+? Is the opamp upgrade really worth it? Can someone explain how does pre amp works?

If i get with the OPA627, will they still ship the OPA2604 together?

Thanks.

Hi, I started to use D2 more and more. How do you control the volume of the subs? thanks,

My sub has its own volume control. I don't believe the D-2 has a way of controlling the volume of an attached sub.

Anyone try rolling some different tubes in the D-2?

I have a pair of Sennheiser IE 800s an dhave been frustrated with my Creative SoundBlaster E5. I am looking into getting the D2 for home listening and wanted to know if I need to buy a separate amp to make it work well with the IE 800. The Soundblaster has had a lack of soundstage and separation that has been frustrating. I've tried the IE800 plugged in directly to the D1 and it sounded great, but I can get a good deal on the D2. I've never used it before and really have no idea how it works.

Hi great community!

My Xonar STX died on me and broke the audio chain.

JRIVER - XONAR STX - LITTLE DOT MK IV - AUDIOENGINE A5+

Is the Maverick D2 still rocking? Would it be a good replacement with justified improvement? I am very interested in this model since I will be able to roll the Burson OP AMPS that I had running on the Xonar card.

Thanks for your input!

I just received D2 with both upgrades. However I can't confirm I got the upgraded GE 5670 Jan tube. I took pics but I'm not allowed to upload. I don't see the green print of GE 5670 from the tube. I can't see print from the tube. Is it really GE 5670?

I just received D2 with upgrades. However I'm not sure if I received the upgraded GE 5670 tube in the new D2 as I don't see any logo or label on the tube. I searched on the internet, all the GE 5670 tubes have green print of logo on them. I'll post pics when I'm allowed to.

The receipt is also weird, showing $40 for an used item. Is that the way to get around custom tax?
