The latter. The DAC chip in S1/S2 doesn't have a line-out hardware feature.

Don't actually recall any dongle that offers true hardware level LO. Though if the PO is very clean, double amping is usually not that bad either.

True. I did have S1 and the LO worked perfectly well, but a hardware level LO would be especially welcome for scaling up on the go and maximising performance.

I had that setup with my S1 for a while. Did work well.

That's what I was hoping for but seems it's also not hardware based. Probably asking too much within the context of a dongle.
