I've had my Beyerdynamic DT770 80ohmers for 4 years now and they've been great, but the upgrade bug is biting me and just looking for something new. Open or closed doesn't matter as these will be used on my desktop,my budget is 2-300$ and most of the music I listen too is older metal. Recomendations?? Thanks

Heya,

Not sure if "upgrade" is going to happen really at your budget level. More like side-grade or simply new flavor. There are a few technical upgrades, but that doesn't mean you'll like the sound better.

Look into:

Beyer DT880
Hifiman HE-300 r2
Hifiman HE-400
Sony MA900
Ultrasone HFI 2400

Denon D2000
Denon D600
Mr Speaker Mad Dogs
AudioTechnica A900X

I would focus on the A900X and Mad Dogs or the HFI 2400 and HE400 based on you liking the DT770 with respect to price.

Very best,

Cool thanks, are the 400's worth the extra 150 over the 300's in your opinion?

Yes.

The HE300 is a good headphone. But the HE400 is an ortho, not a dynamic. It has better mids, better control of deep low textured bass. It just has an overall more hifi sound to it.

Very best,
