^^^Thanks again! Before I make my final decision, do any of you have any opinions on cans from beyerdynamic, AKG, and Grado that might suit the description? I was also looking at the Denon AH-D2000. I know its a closed can, but it looks to be a decent one.

I like AH-D5000/D7000 more than Grados for classical and Jazz.  Grado SR225/HF-1 kill the Denons (even my D7000) for rock.  HD600 are nice but music sounds like all the edges have been rounded off & I prefer Denons and Grados (which also sound ok with ipods).

Thanks for the info on the D2000s I might actually pick them up for myself in the near future. I am pretty much set on either getting my bro the Audio-Technica ATH-AD900 or ATH-AD1000. it seems not to many e-tailers sell these though. I have seen a few on ebay being sold directly by sellers in Japan. A few by a 3rd party seller on Amazon, but thats about it. Do any of you know of any online specialty (authorized dealers) stores that sell these? Thanks!

Musician's Friend has the ATH-AD900 for $279 shipped, with an additional 15% off for orders over $250.  It comes out to $237 and change.  That's cheaper than their current price on Amazon.

The ATH-AD1000 are $309 at Accessory Jack:

Very nice indeed!! Thank you for your help on that. Much appreciated! Musician's Friend even offers a decent priced protection warranty from the looks of it. its to bad Musician's Friend doesnt sell the AD1000 or 2000.

Carefull, the Audio Technicas are huge. I have a big head and always have to order XL hats and helmets ect. I bought the Audio Technicas and they are going back. If they are anything like the 700's , they make them for sasquach. Lol . I say pick up the AKG 702's for $255 on Amazon and give him some cash or gift card with the money left over to put towards an amp. Super comfortable and great sounds. Just my 2 cents.
