I have a Marantz CD12/DA12 and apart from its weight and having to put new belts in the drawer mechanism it still seems a pretty nice player. I think its list price was something like £3,800 in 1988 and I paid £1500 for it in 2000.

As something unusual, strange and once state-of-the-art, though I am not sure if it qualifies as a source component amongst all this modern mouth watering stuff. I do have one of the digital recorders that Decca used to master their classical recordings on during the 1980s and 90s.

Deciding that nothing on the market was good enough, the classical arm of the Decca Recording Company decided in the late 1970’s to design and build their own digital acquisition and post production mastering system. My machine is an acquisition recorder that consists of a modified IVC 1-Inch reel to reel video tape transport, a Decca codec and time code system with a 20 bit A to D using DBX chips. For replay it uses a Phillip Drake D to A with 20 bit Ultra Analogue 2030 hybrid chip and Apogee 914 filters.

Remarkably this little lot still works (fingers crossed) and sounds very transparent. When I acquired it some years ago from Decca when they were closing their recording centre in London I was told that these systems cost around £13,000 to build in the 1980’s.

I simply would like to know if you have done any comparisons to the fixed outs and what are your findings, thoughts, etc. Thanks in advance.

I finally bit the bullet on the last two pieces of my all-MBL system which I've been assembling piece by piece for 2 years now.

MBL 1622 SACD transport (MSRP $27,500) and matching MBL 1611F DAC (MSRP $24,750) for a total of (gulp) $52,250. Not that I paid anywhere near that much, but the money is gone now and the units are on the way. I can't wait.

"GULP - $52,250": Yes, particularly in this uncertain economic environment

But you are in for a major upgrade in sound quality. I think my MBL 1621A (CD only) transport and 1611F DAC ($48,750 MSRP) is on par with the top of the line dCS, Zanden or Esoteric offerings.

So enjoy and try to listen to the new MBL 101E Mk II's. They sound significantly better than the 101E's. More coherent across the frequency spectrum.
