Kenwood KT7500. Didn't know it qualified. Have the matching amp too.

HI-FI WORLD - OLDE WORLDE - TRIO KT7500 TUNER

According to this 180UKP in 1978 when the Linn Sondek LP12 cost 220 and it was nearer 3 dollars to the pound. I'd say it qualifies. Sounds really lovely and there are some interesting mods here Tuner Information Center - Jim and Bob's DIY Mods

Would'nt say it made reel to reel obselete but it certainly made them sit up and take notice

I have the Nak CR7 which is also one of their best, not quite as bombproof in build as your 1000 though.

the nakamichi dragon? if so, that thing is legendary.

Its mechanic was legendary but it was not musical. The 1000, 1000ZXL, 1000 ZXL Gold and 700 ZXL are the real best.

Some prefer the earlier some the later ones. The later ones are certainly technically superior as far as meaurements go but I think the mechanism of the earlier ones is better, certainly more reliable.
I also have a 581 and have had a 480 and a 500 in the past and they did sound more rolled off in the highs perhaps, in a '70s stylee, probably due to less frequency extension, if this is what you mean by musical....
