Lets Talk Metal

It doesn't really matter if you bring something new unless it also happens to sound great. I'm pretty reactionary when it comes to music, and it's very hard for me to get into something new, but I got into Entombed, At the Gates and Opeth because I absolutely loved it only minutes into the first song I heard. That hasn't happened to me in a long time.

On that note, I'd love to get some tips on really strong songs that work well as a gateway into a band. Doesn't have to be new, anything from the 80s on that stands out to you as really great songs would be really helpful as I've got to try and expand on my music library.

Metal only? Which genre do you like?

Have you guys heard of Kvelertak (I swear to god I'll never learn to spell this right)? I just did for the first time last week, and boy.. count me in, although the video isn't exactly my bowl cereal.

LOL, if I had a nickel now for everytime some guy goes...have you heard of Kvelertak?

The answer is no, we don't.  Not a clue....

Yeah they are awesome.  I want to see them live (any chance in the US?)

Slaughter of the soul was incredibly influential in the development of MDM, but I don't necessarily still listen to it much these days. It's not a timeless album like Peace Sells, for example. I also think that most of the other At The Gates releases were frankly not that good. MDM as a genre may have gotten stale, partially because the riffs were co-opted by a hundred crappy metalcore bands. There are still great MDM releases coming out though, which can stand up to the likes of SOTS or Jester Race. 2010 was also a pretty average year in terms of release quality, which can make things seem worse than they really are. 2011 is already off to a smashing start, and we're not even that far in. Listen to Kalisia's Cybion and tell me that's been done to death already. I don't think so.

Dave we are musical blood brothers!  I fell over regarding the metalcore comment.  So true, so true...

It's not unusual for it to take several complete listens for me to really get in to an album. That doesn't make the album bad, it's often quite the opposite. I like an album that takes some risks and offers a bit of a challenge to the listener. When you don't do that, you get Motorhead.

I'm also still discovering a lot of new music from bands unfamiliar to me that I'm really liking at first listen like Mar De Grises, Barren Earth and Allegaeon. If you're looking for suggestions, check out Metal Storm's 2010 award nominees and winners. I don't agree with all of the first place finishers, but I'm sure you can find so.etching there that appeals to you.

But to be fair a lot of people probably haven't heard about them yet... Norwegian black-punk-death-rock is kind of a niche genre after all

I'm guessing they'll have a lot of gigs in the US in the future. Rammstein made it, I don't see why these guys can't make it. They'd be pretty awesome live, and I probably get to see them live at least a few times during the summer... For once it pays off to live in the middle of nowhere, but right next to Norway!

Also, an awesome song I discovered just now by Dark at Dawn

I listen to a wide variety of genres, but to stay on topic I'd say any kind of metal.

There are a ridiculous amount of great bands out there but I'll just start randomly naming the first 10 that pop into my head and I really like. :) The genres are all over the place, I apologize.
I'd fare better if you'd choose a genre.

I own Jubilee by them, really impressive. I don't listen to a lot of power metal, but this is one of the few bands that I like of the genre. Of course, my favourite still is Symphony X.

^you didn't just call Symphony X power metal did you? :| I completely agree that they're awesome though!

@negakinu: Thanks alot for your efforts! I think however that we're quite far apart in terms of taste. Do you perhaps know the name of an Arcturus tune that sounds very circus-y? That one always amused me greatly.

I could have suggested 80'ies thrash/death exclusively (check out Skeletonwitch for some awesome oldschool black/thrash! Think Aura Noir with a NWOBHM aftertaste) but I thought you were looking to expand on your tastes.

 Hence my eclectic list.
